Note that the Sams schematic seems to include at least one typo, around the RF coil circuit. I expect the 51 Beitman book is closer to correct. See pg. 46 / pdf page 48.

This is an AA6 with tuned RF stage. Mixed octal and miniature tubes.

We might speculate that the original circuit put AGC on the mixer grid, but for some reason it was removed. When the schematic was updated i to reflect this change, t was a little funky in that area, and the Sams guy got confused.
