The 12AY7 has same basing as 12AT7, 12AU7, 12AX7, etc but really isn't like any of those. A 12AU7 or maybe 6211 would probably sub.

For other types the Loktal 7F8 is similar but again not quite same. For octal the 6SN7 is similar to 12AU7 but 6SL7 may be a better choice to replace a 12AY7.

For a very cheap alternative, the 12AU7... they are under $10 ea for good used ones and less in quantity. Run them DC too if you want less hum.

The Octal 6C8G is electrically very close to the 12AY7

Why replace the 12AY7? I see plenty of cheap ones on Ebay.
