For an IF amplifier which is the better tube. 6SG7 or 6AG7 ?

Depends... 6SG7 is a remote cutoff pentode and the 6AG7 is really more of a power tube although it was used as a video amplifier in a few early TV sets. It would be a sharp cutoff tube.

6AG7 offers a few more negative volts AVC than the 6SG7. Seems to work fine and a bit more sensitive.

Probably be OK but a 6AG7 has a 650ma heater vs 300ma for 6SG7.

Keep eye on power transformer temps.
