if I put a micro SD card into my wife's cellphone for more memory storage, will it make a difference in battery life, as in, use up more power ?

these cards need power at some point or use power all the time when the phone is on, correct ? so that means it may eat away battery life ?

this card will have pictures/videos on it, no running aps.

this question might seem a bit elementary, but this is one field (hand held electronics) that I know nothing about and probably never will.

thanks.

If I am not mistaken, flash memory does not use any power unless you read or write data. I'm not sure if I can get motivated to look it up.....:)

The lazy approach (which I would probably select) is to see what happens with the card installed.....

I doubt it will make much difference. It is not hard drive spinning all the time.

Read/write will be about the only power consumption and I imagine it is minute.

i like to ask here b/c until one looks stuff up and searches thru all the jargon on the internet, it's always nice to hear about any personal experienes first.

They (cards) have to have a charge to hold data, but it lasts a while and isn't much. However, when my gps has the card in it, it takes a bit longer to boot up and that's because it's looking at all the directories in the card and getting ready for their use. I doubt it takes much battery power but it certainly must take some over no card installed. The cpu time taken to accomodate the card likely uses more power than the card itself requires.

If you take a card out, there is no longer any power being applied and they don't become blank, so I would think power isn't necessary to store data. You are right about the device having to search through additional directories to find things, and that would take some amount of power to do.

On my phone 4% of the battery use is from WiFi; 2% is from the display. Accessing the SD Card has to be a small fraction of either of those things, so I doubt one would see a noticeable difference in battery life.

The bit cells inside the card hold a teeny tiny charge.

To put this in the context of the original question---they do not consume power in order to store data. My camera sits around for weeks without being powered up, and the data stays there.

But you reboot your phone what - a few times a year?

It's funny... that you say you doubt YOU will ever get involved in the field... yet your wife expects YOU to add the SD card?
She can certainly do that by herself. If she goes to any cell phone store they will sell it to her and install it. Right?
Where do you need to be involved in that?

not "the field" itself b/c i'd pull my hair out. it's the field of "owning one".

those darn semantics again  .

The battery life killers are the apps. I find that I need to swipe a number of them off on occasion to keep the battery life reasonable. I have a 4 GB SD card in my phone and didn't notice any loss of battery life, but then I did so not too long after getting the phone and I was probably using it and playing with apps more back then (nearly two years ago).

I put an 8 gig card in my phone and didn't notice ANY difference, but if I forget to turn off wifi I get about half as much battery life.

the 256GB in my Z1 doesn't affect the battery at all.

The real ticket, at least what I've learned, is to have one or two extra batteries. As soon as the thing is taken off the charger it IS working itself down toward being a dead battery. Ths ALWAYS happens during a period when you need it the most and there's no wall outlet to plug into.
It's easy to just flip the back off and plug in a fresh battery.
I also understand that some (maybe more than some) newer cell phones have batteries that are not easily accessed, basically soldered into the system. It that's the case, if you, or you over there.. have that type of cell phone, well, it sucks to be you.

I keep about 800 or so Mp3's on a 16 GB SD card in my phone. No issues with it holding a charge ... I usually just put it on charge overnight but in a pinch it will run a couple of days. I have a couple of the extra batteries that plug in through a mini USB port if I need an emergency boost . One of those lives in the car and will charge off the car's USB port. That is a very handy thing to have.

Definitely worth it to add the memory in my opinion.
