I was tired of settling for less and finally stopped all service work for a whole week to focus on building a new electronics work-bench. Still moving things around and not fully set up just yet, I am already very satisfied. I have quickly come to realize a good workbench can make a huge difference! Well worth the many hours of work/labor involved to finally make this a reality! Everything was cut to lengths and hand built with the best quality lumber I could find locally.

Jon

Dang sweet! I like the upper and lower lights. I recently installed an LED shop light in my workshop...can never have too much light when working on these things.

Nicely done, Jon.

I too like the LED lighting and have one over each bench.

Your storage/lighting hood has me think about adding one to at least one of my benches.

A good bench, as you now know, gives you a whole different feeling as you work.

Kind of disappointed Jon... I feel that the finish on this cabinet is not up to your usual high standards. Perhaps you should consider sending it to Fred Taylor for some spit and polish! ;-)

For those of you without a shop's Big-switch...
viewtopic.php?p=2844019#p2844019

If you want to paint it, water based eggshell (slight sheen) is pretty tough and there is no long lasting (overpowering) smell like the oil based type.

Neat bench... :)
Greg.

Looks good. Not sure I would leave that big 18" sitting on the floor under the bench

Nice job on building that work bench, If I lived near buy I could have put a nice finish on it and we could have traded out, do some electrical on a few of my radios for a nice finish. Looks good without it.

About a year ago I realised I was rarely doing anything on the bench lately. So I rebuilt an abandoned one in the basement and moved everything down there. It made all the difference. I've been busier down there then I have been in the last 10 years. A new bench/work room makes a difference.

I like the upper light / storage hang shelf. Great way to add space and lighting when the ceiling is already finished.
Why waste time and effort cutting up a good ceiling when the same time and effort adds both light and space.

Power strip on the front. Looks recessed enough to be safe. I was standing and leaning forward when I blew my zipper apart on a work bench when the little flip up fly part went into the hot side and the metal zipper part pressed on the grounded metal case of the power strip, big blue flash, smoke, and a loud bang. Man did I rush to the bathroom to check for equipment damage while everybody in the room was hooting and hollering. Other than my zipper and pride, no problems.

The only problem I can see with that new bench is that you can still see some of the work surface but of course that shouldn't last long.

Other then that it is perfect.

Well done, Jon!!

A new bench providing more room to spread out, definitely makes a big difference. I built a new test bench a few years ago and it made things a lot easier.

You might also consider a plug strip on the back and add a couple holes to snake power cords through.

Inspirational - I've been thinking of going low/sit down lately and this just might push me to do it!

The articulate lamp is from the late 1920's/early 1930's. The magnification lamp is likely 1940s vintage.

Thanks

Jon
