Hi guys. Can any of you tell me where I can pick up the 2 pin female plug that will fit the 2 pin male plug (as pictured)? I know that I'm also going to need an inline fuse, and some 18" of wire as well.

The 2 pin male plug (pictured) is approximately 13.0mm (0.51") across, and 8.3mm (0.33") wide.

The 2 pin male plug comes off the magneto of the 12.5 HP Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine, and there is a diode on the red wire immediately behind the male plug. What I need is the 2 pin female plug. Thanks!

Write down the model # of the engine and look up the parts list on briggsandstratton.com

It will have the mating connector part number.

Probably will be 398661

Thanks for the tip. The engine model number is 286707-4529-E1 so I'll look it up.

Might be ref number 356, aka part number 398808, listed as a “wire stop”. Has a female plug with 2 wires on it. Shows it to be for the alternator section I think, for your model engine.

Okay. I'll go with Part No. 398661. Thanks Scott!

It could be, but it shows it as being a plug with two black wire leads. I think that these Briggs & Stratton parts outlets really need to straighten out their inventory so as to make things clear.

That's certainly an option, but I would have to install another diode if I did. You see, the original diode is connected behind the 2-pin male plug. The diode is that taped up part on the red wire (see the first photo).

Yep, the Part No. 398661 worked all right. I finally received the plug in the mail yesterday, and installed it (along with a 0.5A fuse holder - Radio Shack Part No. 2701281) today. Yes, I verified with a digital voltmeter that the battery was indeed being charged. Thanks for all your help guys!

What is the 0.5A fuse for?
The charging coils are rated at 4 to 9 amps depending on options. The lighting winding normally about 2.A

The 0.5A fuse is used as protection for the magneto in case the battery cells short. In this set up, the battery is apparently being trickle charged. I mean, shortly after I started the engine, the battery voltage was at 12.52 VDC. About 1.5 minutes later, the voltage had rose to 12.71 VDC so it appeared to me that the charging circuit was in fact working.

Still seems odd as I have worked on dozens of 12-20HP engines in riding mowers and all had 15 to 20 amp fuses.

Most charge at only a few amps, you will typically see less than 13V but thery are charging.

Well, what you seen in my write up was exactly what transpired. Please read it again. After a full 2 minutes of the engine running, that 0.5A fuse was still intact. Now how would a AGC 0.5A fuse last for 2 full minutes if the load was actually several amps? That was why I simply figured that the battery was being trickle charged. In fact, I mentioned to my brother today what other ARF members had commented, and he immediately told me that the battery was only being trickle charged.

Edit: Yes, you read it right. That was a AGC 0.5A fuse that I installed, and not a MDL.

Update: Well, I mowed the lawn for a good 2 - 2.5 solid hours today with the lawn mower. Afterwards, while the engine was still running, I measured 12.60 VDC at the battery so the charging circuit is obviously working. I won't perform any more voltage checks with this so it looks like I got a winner. Thanks again for your help guys!

Auto parts should have it. If not you could replace it with a mating pair. Try napa
