But as is it is it could do a few radios within 20-30 feet or so?

With a ground and the supplied antenna, yes.

I am listening to it now. With an mp3 player through an amp, a good ground with about 15' of antenna I get good to fair reception on an AA5 at 15' and a Zenith console at 35'. Back yard with a Walkman 50'. This can easily be enhanced with a var cap/coil.

The legal limit for antenna length is 10 feet.
A good, properly operating part 15 transmitter with a legal antenna and ground can give a range of about 200 feet.

If a "legal" antenna can put out a signal to 200' and his "illegal" antenna gets him 50 feet at best, what difference does it make if the antenna is five feet too long?? There's the letter of the law and the spirit of the law.

Ground the neg side of the battery and raise antenna fully.

What is the input impedance of the AM transmitter? Is a power amp recommended to drive the audio into the transformer or would a pre-amp suffice?
