How about some great voices like Eydie Gorme and Keely Smith?
Almost forgot the power of their super voices...

I didn't realize Eydie was still with us. Here's her and her husband's official site:

You got that right, Fifties. Don't forget The Andrews Sisters and Diana Ross.

Well, I named the epitome, AFAIAC.

Next in line would be Patti Page, and Patsy Cline, both of whom can make my spine shiver or my lungs feel giddy when they hit certain notes.

Honorable mention would certainly go to;

Diana Ross
Billie Holiday
Eartha Kitt
Ruth Brown
Tammy Wynette
Karen Carpenter
Jo Stafford
Sarah Vaughn
Dinah Washington
Connie Francis
Kathy Young
Mama Cass
Debbie Reynolds
Linda Scott
Shirley Reeves (lead singer for the Shirelles)

There are also others, such as Toni Arden and Eileen Rodgers, who only had one hit record, so while enjoyable, hard to establish a trend with them.

+1 on Roberta Flack "First time I ever..." Pure, ethereal beauty.

Whitney Houston was a freaking amazing vocalist. Not sure why this thread started with a put down of her. And Julie London, Chrissie Hynde, and Dusty Springfield.

I missed Kathryn Grayson on my list. Those who don't know her should just listen to her duet with Mario Lanza in "The Toast of New Orleans", and listen to Mario Lanza match her note for note.

I guess if we are also going for lead singers, Trudy Williams (The Six Teens), and Renee Hinton (the original Capris, 1954) would have to be included.

Doris Day and Rosemarie Clooney both have warm clear voices that sound like they are singing just for you .

I know she's already been mentioned, but I'd put Dinah Shore right in between those two....

And after some thought and memory jostiling - I want to change my answer to The Andrew Sisters. Individually I don't know about. But together they could make a sound like I've never heard before or since. The most beautiful singing I've ever heard...

Wow, I didn't think anyone would mention Anne Shelton! I have a compiled CD I made of her WWII recordings. Hard to believe that the deep resonant voice on some of her early recordings are coming from a 17 year old girl!

Her "I'm Stepping Out With A Memory Tonight", "Only Forever", "I'll Be Seeing You", and "Kiss the Boys Goodbye" are classics from the war era.

Eva Cassidy. So sad that she died in 1996 at the young age of 33

I know she was briefly mentioned earlier but I have to add Vera Lynn to my list. I picked up her "Yours" album (1961) this weekend and am playing it for the second time as I write this. Good gracious she had a voice! When the only exposure to her is a WWII compilation that includes 78's "White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square", or "We'll Meet Again" you really can't appreciate how good she was. I sure didn't until I found this High Fidelity album.

I just picked up two Keely Smith albums. What a great voice. I have one album of her and Louis Prima, what a blast listening to those two together.

Eydie Gorme has a powerful voice with great range and boy can she hold a note, but to my ear she sometimes seems to be a half note off pitch. Maybe it's just me.
