No, it's not just you, many of her notes are flat.

Agree with many of the picks. Probably at the top of my list are Karen Carpenter and Peggy Lee.

Somehow I'm also attracted to the some of the more recent English-born singers:

Tracy Thorne (Everything but the Girl)
Corinne Drewry (Swing Out Sister)
Lisa Stansfield
Annie Lennox (Eurythmics)

That was her biggest hit, released in 1955.

My favorite is, "Blues in the Night" (My mama done told me...).

Came upon a box of LP's at an outdoor flea market this week and started to browse through. Many, if not most, of the cardboard sleeves were fair to rough so before wasting too much time I grabbed one of interest and pulled the record out just to see if it was as bad as the sleeve. It was "The Best Of Julie London". My jaw dropped. I swear it was never played or maybe just once. It was mint. OK, now I was on the hunt and shortly found a copy of "Swinging With Her Nibs" by Georgia Gibbs, also mint. I just finished listening to the Julie London album (is it getting warm in here?) and am halfway through the Georgia Gibbs album. Great stuff. On the track of "Let's Do It" she cracks up and breaks into a laugh at one point, something you'd never find on today's "processed" recordings. Great stuff for a buck each!

Larry

Just picked up a double Bessie Smith LP singing the blues. Wish it had a little more fidelity but that's the limitation of the technology at the time the recordings were made.

At the risk of sounding creepy, she's cute as all get out too.

+1 million. Most breathtaking virtuosity free pure vocals I have ever heard.

Honorable mention to Chrissy Amphlett, who died earlier this year. Just found out about it today. Cool redhead punk girl who was born on the same day as I was. If anyone on this site knows who she is, without google, I will faint.

Nancy Lamott had a beautiful voice also; she died in the 90s at a young age unfortunately.

Judy Collins
Joan Baez

EDIT---forgot Cyndi Lauper

(am I showing my age?)

Was Nikki one of the finalists last night? I was disappointed in their performaces, except for MK who just had the house standing twice in ovation... And also the cute little high schooler tuba player.... She actually did a great job singing but her personality will carry her. I can't even imagine being 17 and facing that sort of competition. They have such an amazing group of talented kids this year. I'm predicting one of the good ole Alabama boys will take the prize. They are so amazing, and a couple of other guys too.

I've probably said this before but if I had to narrow it to just one group, it would have to be the Andrew Sisters. Time does not make their very unique harmony any less amazing to me. Though Cyndi's "She Bop" was rocking back in the day! I'm just glad nobody chose Miley Cyrus. I can't imagine anyone finding her interesting. Except Jane Goodall maybe. And then only if she was conducting observations of primate mating behavior....

What a great rip of Miley...wonder how Darwin would write about her and her antics? I know this is about female singers, but...I remember the big brouhaha over Jim Morrison and the things he did on stage...poor guy must be spinning in his grave.

Eesh, putting Miley Cyrus and Jim Morrison in the same conversation is enough to make your skin crawl. He may have had his moment(s) of infamy but at least he was coming from a place of thought and creativity.
