Part of the fun of buying a stack of good jazz lps for $1 at a Kansas farm auction are the unexpected bonuses. 30 good lps for $1 yesterday with a signed Pete Fountain hidden amongst them.

A couple Classical 78 albums. My local thrift store was charging ten cents a disk (including LPs) so I got both these albums for a total of eighty cents! Classical 78's seem to be the ugly stepchild of 78 collecting, but when you can get them for next to nothing, why not? The Nutcracker has been played more than the other set no doubt because it got a lot of play at Christmas time, but all the disks were there and undamaged. I like the artwork on these old 78 albums so I'm drawn to that as much as I am the music.

Couple of Elvis 78's for $1 each at a garage sale. Playable shape.

Image

$1 at a another garage sale. Monarch single sider. Release date of January 1904 so it's 110 1/2 yrs old. Doesn't look much more than 65. Note the spindle hole was drilled out. Wondering if a previous owner way back when had a Standard Disc player only and that only took the larger spindle holed Standard Disc records? So hey drill the hole bigger and I can play this too. It takes some centering on my Victrola but it does play with no problems.

More 78's. Some more classical and a couple odds and ends from two different thrift stores. The albums were $1.99 each including the "Record Album" album which has four disks in it including two performances by Oscar Levant that I didn't already have plus one by Horowitz. Then there's the nice 10" album of popular stuff by Jo Stafford's Husband and his orchestra. Finally, I got two 10" Japanese disks for $1.00 each. I only had $2.00 cash so I picked up these two and will go back tomorrow for the three or four I had to leave behind.

Along with Buck Owens and His Buckaroos "I Don't Care" on LP in glorious Monophonic HiFi, I found a short stack of interesting 45's at my local thrift store:

Beatles - She Loves You/I'll Get You (Swan label)
Dion & The Belmonts - Wonderful Girl/When You Wish Upon a Star
Jo Stafford - La Vie En Rose (a personal favorite)
Two Crosby Xmas discs - both Decca - White Christmas (of course) and a stereo 7" 33-1/3 with four tracks.
Tommy Edwards (Mom's favorite) - Morning Side of the Mtn/Please Mr Sun
Nat King Cole - Buon Natale/The Happiest Xmas Tree
JFK - Highlights of Oath of Office/Inagural Address
Durante/Chevalier - Dear World/We're Going UFOing - promo
William Shatner - The Transformed Man/How Insensitive - promo
Dorsey Brothers - 7" 78rpm - Papa Loves Mambo/Not As a Stranger

They are all pretty trashed since they were in big pancake like stacks with no sleeves, but I'll clean them up as best I can and enjoy my oddball assortment! Need to figure out how to get the thrift store tags off the labels without doing too much harm.

25 cents each at the first yard sale of the day. Been wanting the Ray Charles lp for quite awhile. 2 Jackie Wilson 45's too. Flipped through hundreds of lps only these 4 caught my eye. One of my favorites by Ray is on this lp:

Newest additions are Hawaiian/Tropical themed: The Kilima Hawaiians "Hawaiian War Chant" on Columbia's budget Harmony label; The Outriggers "Rapture: Hawaiian Moods" on Warner Bros; and The South Sea Seranaders "Tradewinds Romance from Hawaii to Tahiti."
on the budget Somerset label.

There sure seemed to be a Hawaiian "wave" , sorry for that, back in the '20's. Pale K Lua must have sold millions of 78's on the Victor batwing label.

The last one I bought was Roy Acuff - The Wabash Cannonball.

Before that was Kate Smith - God Bless America

Both were 78rpms.

Last more recent music purchased was Alan Jackson 34 number ones.

50% off day, final day, of a 3 day estate sale. Once again I was the only one interested in 3 days on 78's. Wichita? Really? "Haven't sold a one" I was told by the company running sale. Nice condition 78's. All in binders. Toe tappers by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins etc. 3 milk crates full in binders for $15 total. 250 maybe?

And part of the fun going through a good sized lot of 78's is finding an oddball now and then. Saw duet / Saw Solo actually came in a kit one could buy if you had an interest in learning to play musical saws. 5" diameter record and looks black but in the light it turns bluish green. Couldn't find out what it is made of. Rather flexible though.

Nice score! I'm patiently waiting for my 78 windfall. I have two different people who have each promised me boxes of 78's that belonged to their parents. I'm waiting for them to get all the belongings sorted out and then I'll find out what they have. In the mean time I did find two 78 albums: "Play Pretty For the People" by Louis Prima which has 3 disks and "Hot Jazz" by The Quintet of the Hot Club of France which has 4.

I hope it comes through Squire. If I had people ACTUALLY call me whom I've given my phone number to regarding 78's my phone would be ringing quite often. I have around 1500 now. Too bad ARF members showing interest in 78's live so far away. I have a few hundred I'd give away.

One of them is my Sister so I feel good about those 78's coming through. She and her Husband recently had to put his Mom in a care facility and have a box from her old house. My Sister mentioned my 78 collecting to her coworker and she said they have "boxes" of them that I can also have. Here's hoping! I gave my number to the guy who owns the local record store since he told me whenever he gets 78's he usually throws them away! There is also someone advertising locally on Craigslist with a large 78 collection they are selling off, but I haven't had the nerve to call him, I'm afraid I'll spend too much money! :D
