I used watch his show on tv. I thought it was called "Riverboat", but apparently that's not right ...

The tv show was "Rollin' on the River", later just "Rollin'", according to wikipedia. I can see how yiu'd remember that as "Riverboat".
It was made in Canada, but it wasn't the only one. I think at the time I did wonder how such big names got shows on Canadian tv.

At that time I think I had an old Admiral or DuMont B&W TV in my room. Even my parents didn't have colour yet.

I remember driving my fellow students crazy in after hours electronic class high school senior year by playing "Lucile" over and over for hours. He was a man who persevered for decades to become a country music star.

Everything was in black & white until 1980. Well other than a few times when I watched tv elsewhere

Peter, that is what my classmates did to stop me playing the song. It did not work.

Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, Smothers Brothers Show, about 1969, definitely B&W at my Dad's. "I Just Dropped In" was the first hit I think "Ruby" and "Somethin's Burnin" following close behind.
In those days, you started in a group, what the producers thought would sell, but a star could go solo after a couple of albums. Studio musicians played on all the recordings anyway.

R.I.P. I guess my favorite song was, "The Gambler" ("you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run...").

Those were my favorites from him. An online article said he had an obscure song as early as 1957. Another song followed that's very rare. He was Also in the New Christy Minstrels in 1961.

Kenny never was a country singer...he was always rock/pop... I don't know why anyone considers him country.
I saw him in concert at the state fair here in the 70s...it was a terrific show....

I never considered him anything other than Country, but his songs certainly weren't traditional. When I think of country crossover to ... rock .... blues etc, artists such as Willy and his Outlaws compadres come to mind as does The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band etc.

Thinking of some lyrics: Don't take your love to town, coward of the county, for a taste of your whiskey, rugged hands upon the plow. Duets with Dolly, pickin' wild mountain berries.
