Today, one of the great country performers passed away from Covid 19.
He was one of my favorites and I met him in tootsies Orchard lounge in Nashville
in 1965.
Country music has lost another great one.

Just saw that on the news. What a great singer he was!

RIP Charley. 86 years old - - I'd say that's a good run for anybody. (Of course they blame it on that which is not discussed. . .) A true country music innovator in many ways. Now he'll get the chance to actually "Kiss An Angel Good-mornin" .

His last performance, November 11th on the CMA Awards. He came down with symptoms about 2 weeks later. He traveled from Texas to Nashville to be on the show and sadly, that trip may have contributed to his death. RIP

This is sad. Wouldn't his doctor advise him to cancel? Wouldn't his agent advise him likewise? He could have recorded a video for the ceremony.

Sorry for Charlie, he had a great life. I met him at the body & paint shop I worked at when I was painting cars in Dallas at a high end Body shop. Early in the morning just opened the doors and a Big Mercedes S-500 pulls in the shop instead of the parking lot, just pulls right in, manager says that's Charlie Pride no problem. Manager knew him well. Any way I got to meet him and talk briefly with him. Had a scratch on his car wanted it fixed. RIP brother

Charley had class.
May he rest in peace alongside Trini Lopez, who also passed away in the wretched year of 2020.

A Charley Pride documentary appeared on cable TV last night "I'm Just Me" from the title of one of his many many albums.
Did y'all know? He recorded over 400 songs.
He was a baseball player, a pitcher in fact, and moved to Montana to play ball in the 1950's.
He broke into the Nashville music scene and got on the radio when not many people knew he was black. That was the wonder of 1960's radio.
In 1971, he was given the Country Music award for best performer, 50 years ago. Glen Campbell presented the award.
In 1980, the plane they were flying in was clipped by another plane and pilot and copilot brought the plane down safely with part of the tail missing. Charley and the band climbed into another plane and carried on to Toronto where they were scheduled to perform.
So no wonder he went to Nashville for the Awards in 2020. He was unstoppable.
In hindsight, the people in charge could have sent a team to him for a videotaped special. He didn't need to travel from the safety of his home. In my mind, it was poor judgement to send that invitation to appear, and completely unnecessary.
