I was listening to "fifties on five" on my Sirius/XM car radio while driving home yesterday, and the announcer said that the group chose that name because Buddy Holly's vocal group was named The Crickets.

As I recall, they were "The Silver Beetles", then somebody thought up the 'beat' part. Named after George's VW bug, no I just made that up. How did Holley's Crickets get their name? In the Gary Busey movie, does somebody hear a cricket in the bass? Could be an invented story.

I never knew that, but I guess it makes sense as I remember they did a cover of That'll be the Day. I remember always imagining them as a literal group of cartoon bugs when I was like 5.

Buddy Holly died in early '59 before the Beatles were so named. They went by the aforementioned Silver Beetles and they were the "Quarrymen" before that. As a band in Germany they did do a lot of cover songs and BH had to be one artist they not only covered, but were inspired by. At least 2 of the Fab Four were playing together at gigs back to '57. They did a lot of gigs in Germany. Harrison was kicked out of Germany because he was under 18 and had no work permit. Slowly they gathered one by one adding Ringo when back in England. This all took place over a long 2 years and is certainly the cliff notes version. They went back to Germany more than once to play extended gigs.
The Beatles name was born in 1960. They had a short recording contact in '61 and a better contract in '62. I think we all know that they came to the forefront in '63 and after an appearance on Ed Sullivan in '64, they exploded. It all began to unwind in '69 but the record companies kept releasing songs and albums making the end of the group sort of fuzzy. It wasn't fuzzy to Paul or John.
