I do not understand "saving the vinyl industry". I thought all kinds of "hipsters" or others are all hung up on vinyl records lately. And, it all seems relatively silly to me.
Much cooler, I think, would be to "save" the CD industry. It is asinine that I can buy a vinyl album of a recent recording, but not a CD that is a vastly better format overall. Digital downloads are OK, but I would much rather buy, hold, and own a Compact Disc.

The last time this came up, it was moved to the music forum, and still gets posts to the thread.

I don’t know about “saving” the vinyl industry, but it’s sure hot right now. The stereo shop is fixing and selling record players and selling cartridges at a breakneck pace
However, regarding CD’s, a huge obstacle is that players are virtually unrepairable. Absolutely unobtanium Lasers, lenses, custom chips and parts, lack of specialized tools….and no affordable new ones
So vinyl may survive way better than CD’s
Also, no one making cds, a few with more to come making records. Just fact

Anyone who has taken the time to listen to a quality vinyl system and compared it to a CD would argue the point that a CD is the better format. It just isn't. And when I say "quality" I'm not talking about a Chinese Crosley. Anybody that thinks they sound good has a tin ear. Larry

Dvd and bku-ray players can play CDs. Not as convenient since most need the tv set on for display. But I suspect that's why cheap cd players have disappeared if that's true. I've not paid attention.
I bought up a bunch of portable CD players, for headphone use, for a dollar each some years back, buying here and there at garage sales. So I should be okay.
I can play CDs on the comouter, it has a DVD drive.

CD's, at least in my house, are gathering the same dust as my not inconsiderable collection of 33 & 45 vinyl, R to R tapes, 8 Tracks, & cassettes. They've simply been outmoded by streaming online stations and MP3's stored on my hard drives. I haven't played anything physically in IDK how many years.

It's all about how the well mastering is done. There are albums that sound better on LP, and albums that sound better on CD. The format is not the reason, it's the source and the mastering that matters.

I think maybe history moves in swells, like large waves - after one forms, rides, and crashes, another that looks just like it comes up behind.
I sometimes like to get my favorite newer artists on vinyl as a sort of collectible - I've always preferred physical media, and the big discs are cool to have. It seems that all new artists tend to have at the very least a small run of records for new albums, which tells me they must be selling. With the advent of record eating devices named after once-great companies, it's not a huge investment either.
But back to the waves thing, I think we're riding high on records and in a few years we'll be seeing cassette tapes as the hot new collectible. The sort of 80's neon lo-fi whatever-you-want-to-call it style is in now, at least with some groups, and between that and the advent of YouTube channels like Techmoan and others bringing old audio formats back up to a large audience in an easy to understand and perhaps "trendy" way, I'd bet a few bucks that artists will have their labels fire up the old tape duplicators soon enough. Keep that trend up, and we'll cycle right back around to having CD racks again. And hey, no complaints here - CDs are still the way I primarily collect music.
I don't think the analogy works for everything, though - I have zero expectation to see 8 track tapes ever again, for example.

Quote: I have zero expectation to see 8 track tapes ever again, for example. Nope, you won't see NEW ones. But the shops that still fix vintage HiFi, are seeing vintage ones brought in for repair. I am NOT making that up

Right, hang on to those CD's. Sure, the music is mostly there on the streaming services, but is it the same version that was on the LP or 45? I could list a few that are not. You hear only the tune that somebody chose to upload, but maybe not the version with the organ track, or the artist sings it a little differently this time, or maybe the remastered version only.
As for players, I have the Sony 50+1 CD carousel jukebox sitting dormant at the moment, but can be programmed to play CD selections all day long. Can't believe it's 30 yrs old.

You.mean the streaming services are using K-Tel tracks?
Even in the CD age, I've come across collectiins with fine print about how "tracks may be rerecordings". But nothing specific. Sometimes you can tell, other times you aren't sure.
Oddly, some recordings have been issued on CD in recent years, but in such small pressings you.miss if you blink. I wanted Jorma Tanega's album, for the classic song "Walking My Cat named Dog", a new rerelease, but soon gone.
I buy CDs, but I worry it won't keep going. On the other hand, a whole lit of stuff has stayed in print for over fifty years. There were all those records in the thirties that had one pressing and disappeared. So collectors in the sixties were out digging up the records, and artists who faded into other jobs after their recording. But endless recordings from the fifties and sixties still in print. So Electric Flag and Seatrain, The Great Society, The Charlatans, bands that were famous but never had the same success, I can buy on CD in the past few years. But how much.longer?

If you've got CD players that still work, great. But if they ever stop working, good luck getting them fixed or even finding someone willing to just take a look

But like I said earlier, DVD and blu-ray players can play CDs. And my computer certainly still has a DVD drive.

of course. But the "vintage" audio enthusiasts want their Fisher, Harmon Kardon, or Pioneer fixed. And they can't be
