From what I've read, Doug Ingle was drunk when he said it, which is why it came out goofy and was misunderstood.

On top of the words wrong the studio record them as they were just warming up doing a sound check and the preducer decided to use it.

Same urban legend I have heard for 50+ years! So stoned he couldn't get it out straight! Too bad this is all the Butterly are remembered for, as Doug's compostions are staggering in their brilliance. especially when one considers that the late 60's-early 70's were a very fertile musical time.

There is a short sample (played by Iron Butterfly, not spliced in) of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" in the song. No lyrics, just the melody instrumental.

Appropriate for the times, "to save us all from Satan's power when we have gone astray", which I interpreted as a Vietnam war reference.
