Hi everyone,

New to the forums and did some searching but I’m not coming up with anything yet. I just picked us this set to use with various Atari consoles but I’m the case in yellowing and smells like smoke, perfume, candles, etc. My local library doesn’t subscribe to SAMS so I’m wondering if there’s any other resources for how to open the thing.

Thank you in advance,

Tim

Can you show a picture of the back? That may help give us a clue.

Back pix would help.
Looks like a Toshiba build. Typically 2 screws at the antenna block, 2 or 3 along top & 2 or 3
along the bottom. Also may be one on right side part way up the back.
When you think you got them all just pull back & juggle the back. If it fights you look for
another screw.

See the case is in two halves.

Looking from the back there are recesses emanating from where the two halves join. There are some at the top and more on the underside. At the end of these recesses are philips head screws. There is also another screw on the back near the power socket. Removing these screws will let you separate the two halves.

Don't mistake those holes in the back for fixing screws.

Once you have the back off the PCB slides back. Pulling the knobs off will let you unscrew the control bracket. Four screws hold the CRT in place to the front plastic moulding. Use great care not to break the CRT. You should be able to remove the complete works without having to unplug anything.

Wash, dry, reassemble.

Got it. 4 screws on the bottom, two on the top near the handle, the two at the antenna terminals, and some elbow grease to break the adhesive holding the two parts together.

It is in fact a Toshiba per the paperwork inside.

Thanks for the help.

Now that its opened, I've blown out all of the dust that I can with compressed air, but there's a layer that won't come off without wiping. I'm not experienced enough to take the whole thing apart, so any suggestions on cleaning the inside?

Thanks,

Tim

If the insides do not smell bad, perhaps just leave it alone.

There is a black coating on the CRT. DO NOT clean it off.
No need to clean the rest of the chassis. Dont go lookin for trouble !
Maybe just blow it out with a can of air. There are times to do some cleaning but
this aint one of them. Examples are if a set has water damage or burned PCB that
has to be cleaned out.

It looks very clean for its age. It's not uncommon to see sets that are so dirty inside you can't even tell what color the wires are.

You mentioned that it smells like smoke. That layer that won't come off easily is probably nicotine. It's gross, sticky, and doesn't easily come off. Everything I have acquired here in Spain has it, and I've learned just to leave it aside from cleaning contacts, etc. Rubbing alcohol on a q-tip will remove it but ain't nobody got time for that.
