Hello All,

Another radio I watched awhile on Ebay and finally put in a bid at last moment when there was no other interest... Have liked the styling of this model since I first saw one, but others listed were higher priced. It arrived today. The silver lettering and dial numbers are all worn off on this set, but it's in nice shape otherwise. Did some preliminary cleaning including removing some blue crust resulting from battery leakage from positive contact. Replacing the two electrolytics (one dual) brought it to life and at night it appears to be a good performer. Had a crack in PCB near audio driver transformer, so went ahead and "patched" affected traces with lead clippings as a preventative measure. Sound quality not the greatest but discovered that the batteries I had were somewhat weak, so need to try again later with good power source.

This radio is smaller than other "cordless" sets in collection, but a bit larger than I thought from other pics I've seen.

Hope to get the detail cleaning & "tweaking" completed this weekend...

Anyone else have one ???

Ebay pic below...

John

Tried again after work today with good batteries and the audio still distorted somewhat at all volume levels, so needs a bit of troubleshooting this weekend. It did pick up my favorite low-power DX oldies station at a "listenable" level with volume at max, so sensitivity is decent---and with no interference from adjacent strong local proving excellent selectivity... Realize it's another relatively plain looking radio, but still is interesting with the dual speakers and the centered vertical tuning dial---I sure like it...

Stay tuned !

John

I like it . The knobs show very little wear.

I like it too; bitchen modernistic design.

You should be able to touch up the silver dial numbers with a Sharpie Metallic stick.

I have the clock radio version. Looks like the chassis on these were based on the upright portable sets with the C cell port on the bottom. The clock's battery is a NiCad that is constantly spoonfed a charge from the C cells.

Thanks Guys !

You know---it does remind me a bit of the front of a '59 Edsel (same year as radio) pictured below...

Richard---May have to try the silver Sharpie on it if I can keep my hand steady enough !

Bill---I was thinking the same thing about chassis when I pulled cover ! Do you have a video on your TC1 ? Did see pic of one on-line and it's a neat looking set... Thanks for the info !

John

Hello All,

Completed this radio today...

The numbers on front of tuning dial window had some residual crud in crevices after cleaning, so used "stubby" toothbrush and Windex to remove which clouded surface of the plastic slightly---used Q-Tips and Novus-2 to polish...

The negative "bent wire" battery contact was a bit low to go through slot in battery compartment sleeve, so bent it back to proper position. Noticed that the trace foil was loose/cracked on PCB where it attached, so wrapped lead clipping around it and added solder to make it sturdier.

The full-size volume control was a bit scratchy, so "treated" it with DeOxit Faderlube.

Performance & sound quality both improved with slight tweaking of IFT's. The ANT trimmer adjustment was a bit "rubbery" and found that there was some residue on screw and element which caused it to pull very slightly with rotation due to stickiness and then slowly return---removed screw and cleaned all surfaces with Isopropyl alcohol which corrected issue. Radio is now a very good performer with excellent selectivity. Audio much better, but think there is still a bit of cross-over distortion to be dealt with later...

Was surprised to see that two different size speakers are used---3" & 3 1/2". RCA used grommets to mount and both on the larger speaker crumbled when installed so cut two pieces of automotive rubber tubing of proper I.D. for replacements...

Project pics below---notice neat "sculpturing" of front panel in side view. Also decided to pull the other "cordless" sets off of shelves for a group picture...

A nice addition to that group.
I've wondered about the big/little speaker combination before. I suppose there could be some tonal improvement but only if there is a crossover network, no?

Most likely just a way to cut a few pennies off the production cost, but inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks John !

I was curious, also, if there might be a "tonal" reason for the size difference though they are just wired in parallel...
