I have a broken AM string on a Nordmende Globetrotter type 7/601.
As I had not enough tension on the string (which had become locally quite oil-impregnated), with the spring hardly expanded, I needed to add another turn on the copper pulley. While attempting to do that, the string broke.

String thickness measured = 0,5 mm
Length measured from loop end to loop end = 862 mm.

  • Could anyone confirm this length ? It unfortunately is not mentioned on the "Seilführung für AM-Antrieb"...
  • In addition, could someone confirm the total number of windings on the AM white plastic pulley ?
  • Do I have to put either 2 or 3 windings on the copper pulley on the inner tuning shaft ?

Many thanks
Paul

2 turns on the small pulley, 3 turns on the larger one.

The larger pulley is divided into two subsections, separated by a slotted ring. Before the string was broken I had at least 4 + 4, in total 8 turns (but could have been more also...) on the larger pulley.
Regrettably I just didn't take a picture of the string when it was first successfully mounted, with the spring only slightly expanded.
I could make the larger pulley turn in one way, but not in the other, partially because the string tension was just a bit too slack, and partially because of the oil absorbed inside the string and slipping around the small pulley.

So that is why I would need to know both the length of the string and the total number of turns on the larger pulley.

Kind regards,
Paul

Are you sure that you have chassis 7/601?
I can think of at least five other similar Globetrotters.

Okay, S/N= I01-12643
In order to correctly identify the model, here a picture of the top view, with the not-yet-broken AM-string dangling loosened over the front.
(And yes, the left bulb was pushed in afterwards  )

I don't know where you are located... :)

This is (good stuff) 0.41mm 1/64" Braided and...

I had the incredible luck that I had a carton "NG8 Câble pour cadran" (=dial cord) from Ceterel laying around. It happened to be exactly the same diameter of 0,5 mm too.
Must be very old too, as I couldn't find any single hit on the internet on this.

So I took the length of the original dial cord minus about 2 cm, to compensate for the spring that was not enough expanded with the original dial cord length.
What worked the best for me, was to position the indicator about in the middle, and to provide on the varco pulley 3 turns above the middle ridge and 3 turns below it.

In case you need to remove the varco pulley and to prevent the dial cord from unwinding, slide it from the varco shaft onto a drill bit of 6 mm. This allows you to keep the pulley temporarily fixed in a horizontal position, and to have free access to the varco shaft.
This way you have access to the varco shaft, e.g. in case internal old grease would keep the shaft stuck, or make it turn only by applying force.
Could be a cause of dial cord problems.
As on my Globetrotter, nearly all varcos were very hard to turn, I ran down some drips of acetone on the shaft to dissolve any old grease, and after that added some drips of silicon oil.

Next I need to dive into the electronic issues ;-)

I have one that I have extensively taken apart and put back together to find a very elusive intermittant fault - successfully in the end!. Any help I can give just post here. Mine came with all the documentation too.
