It turned out to be enough to change all the electrolytic capacitors, clean the contacts, and just wash off the dirt. The coils were ok. Works well now.
Radio lacks band knob, but he have a multi-tool.

Nice work! I'm sure your friend will get good use from it. I have the same model radio, bought many years ago. I had to adapt a new control for the fine-tuning, but it is otherwise all original, even the capacitors and works fine. It is very hefty and solid.

It's been many years. As I recall it's a trim pot with no stop so it rotates a full 360 degrees. The challenge was finding one small enough and also adapting the knob to fit. Might be just some contact cleaner would help. Mine was too far gone for that to work.
