So fifties - have you collected all the colors for all the different models of the Emerson 888 "Rocket Radios"?

Noooooo...What you see is my entire stash of that style Emerson. Plenty of other Emerson styles though.

The Emerson Miracle Wand set that fifties posted is a perfect example of a transistor set
plopped into a tube type casing that is ridiculously large, using tube set manufacturing techniques (point to point hand soldered)
and then marketed in the same old, tired American light as a portable that will go anywhere.

Yup, they did something like that, but they did use PCB's, rather than point to point. Actually many of this style tube set also used PCB's. Here's another style Emerson "Miracle Wand" lunchbox, flanked by two of my Admiral tube sets. Notice that they all have rotating antennas.

Here is a pic inside of an Emerson Miracle Wand model 868. Do you see a PCB?
FWIW, I own an 868 too, no PCB inside of mine.
I bought it for that reason, to add to my hand wired collection.

Yup, you're right, I stand corrected. I'm usually right half the time (this just happens to be the other half).

I have a number of this type of set, and some do have PCB's, like this Arvin, inside of which I put an MP3 player.

That MP3 conversion is kewl! And I love the classic fifties look of your Arvin, with a leather face / case to boot!
I am working on something similar (SD card player - FM tuner) rigged into a classic French tube radio.

I bought this little Hit Parade radio at Kutztown thinking it was a crystal set, but it turns out it is a one transistor made by Bell Products in St. Louis:

Found a blue one. It needs a bath and the gold foil glued down.

I found this fixer, a Toshiba "coffin".
This one has a chip and crack free casing, but a cracked dial lens and rear cover.
I have another parts set with a badly chipped case and good donor parts.
Let the games begin!

YES!
I've been trying to find one of these little red gems in good shape for a year now.
SUCCESS!

I have one the Hit Parade radios, John. It is hard to tell because your picture is dark, but it looks like mine has more components compared to yours. I just love the engineering of the tuning mechanism. The rubber grommet moves the ferrite rod in and out of the antenna tube.

Did not know that about the tricky tuner on this radio.
I wonder what is inside of that orange conformal coated circuit?

I have never seen such a tuning mechanism before.

I am not sure. You can't see in the pic, but it has 4 legs. Capacitor?

With 4 leads coming out of the bottom, I would suggest that it's a Couplate. Interesting, as they are usually just found in portable tube radios. It would normally contain resistors and small value capacitors.

Is the link to it.
