For many years collectors have believed the Toshiba 8TP-90's speaker grill was inspired by the front of an early 1950's Studebaker.
Take a look at this photo I just came across. I think THIS could have been inspiration. Maybe we should now call this radio the "Chieftain"?

and here's the 8TP-90

The first pic reminds me of my kitchen exhaust fan. I restored the one in my kitchen(circ 1950), and it looks almost exactly like it.

I just love posting in "necro-threads"!

I second the old exhaust fan similarity. I work in a hospital that was built in the 1950's.
All of the air heating / cooling ceiling vents have this concentric design.
Just one of the reasons I bought two Toshiba concentric radios!
Can you guess the other reason?

Wow---Used to have a couple old Pontiacs years ago and was a member of POCI and HPOC. Never made the connection with the Toshiba until now ! And my Grandpa who had his own heating & sheet metal business long ago used those ceiling vents with his attic furnace in their small cottage style home outside of Canton, IL...

Our 1953 ranchstyle had those in the ceiling. Vintage or antique, reader's choice.

Another vote for the exhaust fan!

So what about that bakelite RCA that has the gold grille that is round and looks like a fan grille? I had one of those and maybe the Toshiba is based on the RCA radio instead of a car. Or maybe it was just a round design idea that was recognized back then.

A number of radios used that design. Here's a pic of my Crosley;

Love that red Crosley and have always wanted an old RCA Bullhorn.
Problem is that most of them are damaged and like most plasticy radios from that era - :shock: "they don't ship well".
You takes yer chances... :shock:

Actually plastic case sets, and esp portables, do ship well. The radios that don't are the ones with heavy metal chassis's and power transformers, both Bakelite and wood cabinets. Of course improper packing will leave anything vulnerable.
