The seller on eBay is mistaken about the original dial. It was intentionally made non-linear to compensate for the non-linear characteristics of the variable capacitor used in the VFO. His new dial actually introduces greater tracking error.

Just goes to show that sometimes the original designs are best left alone. I don't think I've ever modded any rig I've ever owned -- many things are good enough as-is. There are, however, some well-documented and useful improvements for the HW-101. This document is especially useful and includes some improvements that make sense:

My Hw-16 had the dial fall apart as well. Because it's driven via a pinch roller at the perimeter, that was a problem.
I searched in vain for a replacement, and in the end I created a hybrid, I attached the existing dial (with the outer
section removed) to a clear plastic part of the same original diameter and thickness. The pinch roller now bears
on the renovated portion, but the dial graduations are the original.

Anyway -- the HW-101 I recently acquired came with the original build manual. I intend to strip it down and do a complete rebuild using all new components where possible. Much depends on what I find when I open it up, however.

A quick follow-up. I opened up the HW-101 under the bench and was stunned -- it's so beautifully and precisely built by a ham who knew exactly what he was doing, it would be irresponsible to do a tear-down, and it would be for no acceptable reason. Instead, I'll focus on testing components and doing performance updates and reasonable mods. The only problem I found visually was that the rubber belts for the driver preselector are dried up and out of shape -- will have to find replacements.

If they look like belts, they are REALLY out of shape! :D
