I've been working on this TMC set the last week or so. It is one that is a variant modified for the RCAF. Crystal filter installed, 6FM8, 6BE6, 7199 tubes, etc. in the main frame, and 5842 and 6BZ6 tubes in the front end in most of the plug in modules on hand.

The receiver and the modules all appear to have the CAE, Canadian Aviation Electronics sticker on them, showing that they were refurbished in 1964. Was it CAE or TMC that made the changes to the original?

I've got the receiver working FB now. But I would like to find a schematic or manual with these changes documented and more.

Anyone have a schematic available. Thanks.

Al

How many plug-ins do you have with the radio?

I have modules to cover from 2mc to 32mc. and the holder unit to keep a module warmed up when not in the receiver. Getting the case/cover off the tuning cap was interesting in order to clean the wiper contacts on the cap. Its a hot receiver even on the higher freqs. That is when the bands are open.

Hi Russ

Many thanks for sending me the information that you have there. Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, my set is a little different than the FFR-049 set up as per my earlier post. But the manual and schematics that you sent are much cleaner and clearer than the ones I have here, so they are very useful nonetheless. I'll keep searching for the RCAF FRR-502a/R-5007a information. Let me know if I can be of help in getting your set going down the road. 73.

Yeah.....I have 3 plug-ins....
I put the whole setup in a 19" rack table-mount with enough room to put a blank plate affixed with a 4" speaker.
I think I've only cleaned up the switches. Selectivity is a little broad but a decent performer nonetheless.

Which module are you missing Jim?

They do show up from time to time at the hamfests here in Ontario. The audiophools take out the 5842 tube, especially if its a WE brand tube, and then have no use for them. If I see the one you're looking for, I can latch onto it for you.

My receiver has a crystal filter installed in place of the 1st IF transformer. Seems to be about 5.5kc wide which works out well.

I'd have to look. I completed it a number of years ago and needed the room so out to the garage it went.
Maybe someone would like to buy the setup....

I was working in a surplus store in Seattle 1977-1979. The store manager would bid on local industrial surplus and also buy from individuals on appointment or sometimes sellers would just come to the store with something in their vehicle to offer. One day an Alaska fisherman brought in one of these receivers and some other things. He didn't know a thing about them and said he'd picked them up from some Alaska site where they'd been abandoned. ( Thinking back now, I wonder just how strictly true that was. ) The manager bought his gear but then to my disgust, a well-known local talked the boss out of some of the gear, saying that the
equipment was to be used for training local boy scouts, a total BS story. I was never much interested in this receiver as it was intended to be fixed-tuned; the tuning rate in variable mode is quite poor. The quality of construction tho is very good and it is compact.

Back in 1999, all I received with the receivers was a partial bad photocopy of the FFR-049 manual. Just got to working on them over the past month or so.

All the RCAF units that I've seen around here seem to have originated from a local surplus dealer...Globe Electronics in Toronto. I just located a RCAF surplus tag dated Nov. 27 1974 that I found inside one of the modules. The receivers and modules were stored at CFB Borden near Barrie, Ontario. 125 receivers with modules purchased by this surplus vendor.

Thanks to Robert Downs, Greg White VA3VFO, and Bill Griffith VE3WGX, for the FRR-502a/R-5007a rx schematics and module information etc. supplied to me.

The mother ship of TMC documents is here
www.tmchistory.org

John K4OZY was given the company archives by the son of TMC's founder. He even has he original engineering drawings.

Yes, I had looked at all those sites and they were very helpful, but they did not have the information on the modified RCAF FRR-502a/R-5007a rx., with the differences that I mentioned previously.

That's why I put out a request here, and I eventually received the information that I was looking for from WA5CAB. Thanks.

Did you ever find a manual for the TMC FRR-502 Canadian version? I just purchased one with the -5,-6 and -7 plug-in's. In mine the 7199 has been converted to a 6U8A. It was overhauled in 1964 and I can see from the chassis marks that the crystal filter added after manufacture. I would like to modify it by adding a product detector and better AGC. I would appreciate any leads to obtaining a schematic or copy of the manual. Thanks Chuck

Hi Chuck

I can send you the information that I did get regarding the receiver. Let me know where you're located and one way or another I can get the information to you.

TMC made some real good stuff , also some really bad stuff like the gpr 90 receiver that looks like a pin up girl   to a 15 year old. I was never a fan of the frr 502 but the US Navy liked them as they bought a lot of them....WA7OPY
