Marc,

Temporarily jumper all the gangs of the variable loading cap together and then to the output side of L1 using the shortest lead possible. Then try tuning up and see if it behaves normally on 40 meters and lower in frequency so that you will know that you have found the problem.

Did that and no change. However, on another forum a gent compared the results to his 901dm and they came out nearly identical. It is puzzling why there is such a disparity between resonance and max power on the lower bands, but it appears not to be a big deal. There are definite peaks in tuning and loading and preselector. Plate current, while high, is still within the operating limits of the 6146b, I believe. In short, I'm going to take a break, but continue to study on the theory of this issue. Thanks for all the input.
