 Post subject: National HRO 50

The dial on my National hro 50 sticking at about mid dial. I can turn it to the right but turn to left and stops at mid way. I tried removing from cabinet but it was hanging up somewhere and woutnot come out.

Have you tried the dial adjustment procedure described in the above links?

You might also examine the variable capacitors to see if there is some obstruction or bent plates. Then look at the mechanical linkage between the dial shaft and the capacitors: HROs have a rather complex gearbox (the PW or NPW). It might involve some tedious disassembly to access the parts you want to look at. Just take your time, make notes, take pictures.

Les....wondering if you have found the problem.

I just opened up my HRO-50 lid to look inside and discovered that the dial string pulley on the left side wobbles significantly as I turn the main tuning knob. I doubt that this is your issue. In my case, it is a matter of time before the pulley shaft breaks and/or the pulley shorts out the #47 dial lamp socket terminal that is just a few mm's away. I can only assume that the previous owner had set the dial string far too taught to cause this damage.

I think it’s the gear box. But I don’t know
