Use a flat steel tool like a putty knife and see if it's possible to gently pry up and remove the two trim strips flanking the control panel. It appears to me that they cover retainer bolts that hold the control panel to the wood surround, two bolts per side.

Don't forget to unplug the RCA connectors.

it's all 1 solid piece, the 2 trim strips on the side don't appear to come off separately

Surely if you have a tape measure you can locate the countersink head of the machine screw that attaches to these...

Heat the fluted side strips as mentioned with a hairdryer, protect the dial-glass with a piece of cardboard... and use a sharp wallpaper or putty knife - - don't burn anything. lol

lol... you will need an old fashioned (thin-wall) box-wrench to get at these, or grind down a socket!

Refer to the marked up photo to find the location of the retainer bolts. There would be two more on the other side, out of the photo view. These have to come out in order to remove the assembly.

If the sides are solid then the whole face plate must pry off.

Greg.

Possible that the faceplate was inadvertently glued in place courtesy of a spilled sugary soft drink sometime in the prehistoric past.

mystery solved, when i heated the faceplate with a hair dryer the Packard Bell badge at the bottom came loose and the last nut was under that little nametag.

thanks for your help! it's been removed for a recap & cleaning

I knew there was a reason why the name "Packard Bell" gave me a queasy sensation in the pit of my stomach. Who hides a retainer screw under a glued-on nameplate?!
