I recently acquired this radio and needs to be recapped, etc. It also looks like some got in there and tried to “repair” it. My problem it has missing tubes. They are all octals which I believe should be the all American five configuration, ie., 35w5, 50L6, 12sk7, 12sa7, 12sq7. There are some strange modifications such as a bare wire from on terminal on the power switch going to a terminal on the volume control. It’s bare bare and so short it’s touching the case on the volume control. I’m not sure what else was modified. My problem is all the schematics show a later version using 7-9 miniatures. Does anyone have a copy they would be willing to share. I’m willing to pay for. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have one. Bought it off The Bay, missing almost everything, and rebuilt it. AFAIK, Federal only made one model 1040, with one tube lineup. Here's a scan of it, and the tube and parts placements.

Thanks fifties but this is the schematic I have. The front end uses miniatures not octals with the AA5 version. I believe I have an older version. Thanks for trying. Appreciated!

Naww, it's really a simple circuit.

Ralph 100, please post a scan of the top of the chassis.

Try this one, it fits the federal that I have....I made this a little small, I can resize it if you need it.

Here’s the radio as I got it. Less the dirt.

Pretty sure that he was punning on the "Federal 1040" ident. As in Income Tax Form.

Ok, still haven’t found the correct schematic but I plowed through it. The wire I previously mentioned does belong there just not shorting to the volume control. My old eyes didn’t see the connection on the schematic. I got it working, good sensitivity and good volume. Too good volume. The slightest movement above low and it gets pretty loud. The control seems ok when I check it but I’ll have to open one end to see if it’s open somewhere. I found a few resistors way out of value, 2.2 meg measures 3.9 meg, for example. They aren’t even on the print. Thanks to all who threw in their two bits. Any little bit helps.
I’m still going to keep looking for the correct print. It’s got to be out there somewhere.

There can only be one circuit for this model radio, just like any other. In viewing your scan of the top of the chassis, it appears that the two sockets on the left side of it have been attached by screws. If that is the case, then whoever delved into it before you likely changed them.

I would suggest to simply "roll with the flow", and wire it according to the only print available for it. The parts placement diagram I posted earlier should be followed, in order to minimize hum.

I don’t see where you are referring to the screws. All the sockets are riveted.

LOL. Well Mike C, I asked myself that just last night. I got so involved with some of the hodge podge wiring done by someone I never noticed it was missing until I started tracing wires. It was replaced by a mica trimmer and poorly adjusted at that. I started playing around before I broke out the signal generator and it started receiving station albet not well. The volume control was very scratching so gave it a shot of deoxit and it helped a little. After isolating the control I determined it was bad. It was not an original control. It was a stacked control. Why ??? Who knows. I replaced it with a 1 meg switched. Did a quick alignment and violá, it played. I didn’t trace things out because I was frustrated and my eyes were giving out. I should so I can learn from this situation. It was a trip to get it going.

Check out these Lang model 1040s on E-Pay.I believe yours is a variant of these.Your chassis is an earlier version of the white radio,I believe.Notice the large tube socket holes and one IF transformer.

Mine has the stacked control also, they may have been running out of parts...

OK, here's mine, which I had to rebuild almost completely. Two IF's (one from another radio chassis, along with the speaker), and a makeshift mount for the audio output transformer.

Not quite but much clearer than what I am working with. Thank you. I’m also missing the first IF so I’ll be looking for one. If any one out there has one, pm me. Tnx !

AA5 IF cans are pretty generic. Any from these sets should work adequately. That's what I used for mine, from a junkbox chassis.
