Hi Guys,

I've got a Zenith 4R with the pot metal shafts, and they've deteriorated to the point to where they've fallen apart. (shafts are broken) Is there an easy fix? I've thought about trying to drill the knobs and pointers and replace them with brass shafts or something, then I thought someone here must have done this before...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

I just got one of these with a similar problem. Is there any new information available?

This is caused by dis-similiar metal galvanic corrosion.
My bet is some lead was thrown in the mix for better machining ability [that is why lead is in brass, to make it machinable]
If it is not lead then some other element was put in there.
Any lab that analyze used oil will tell you, they either have an atomic absorption spectrometer or an inductively coupled plasma machine.
maybe those things that test for lead paint might work ONLY if lead is the culprit

I have a narrative about how I restored a 3R... It has some of the pot metal shaft/pointer woes of the 4R... I can e-mail you a .pdf.
It is on my website but I can't post the link just now due to old computer problems...
