Hi guys, I recently acquired this radio. It is still virgin so far as I can tell. Works OK on broadcast band, but not shortwave. The underside shows all of the original capacitors and a big electrolytic mounted to the chassis. I have tested tubes, all test OK, so next move is CRC all contacts and pots. Then replaced the paper/foil capacitors.

It also has the original selenium rectifier and a 5OA1 regulator tube, thinking about replacing those as well.

So, do you guys have any idea where I can find a schematic for this beastie?

Chassis number is 6A40-6A41.

It has the following 6 tubes:
3V4
1U5
(2) of 1U4
1L6
and
5OA1

Thanks!

John in Delaware, OH

First, welcome to the forums.

I am not familiar with the Zenith TransOceanics, but I believe your schematic can be downloaded from here... https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/zenith_tr ... .html#data (select the Schematics tab than click on the partial schematic do download it).

Best of luck.

Low voltages due to a weak selenium rectifier can cause lots of issues. Check your voltages, especially filaments, they need to be very close to spec.

I recall somewhere that someone replaced the selenium rectifier with a circuit containing diodes... has anyone else seen that?

Thanks!

Restoring the Zenith Trans-Oceanic H500

There are several versions of the 600 series ZTOs. You need to know which one you have. look on the inside of the back door towards the top should be the model number, if it hasn't been worn away. It will be in the for of x600 x= L, R, T, Y, A, or B. The chassis should be marked with the chassis number 6x40 or 6x41 x=to the same letters as before. The letters should match from the chassis and cabinet. You will need to get the schematic for the chassis number that you have. I believe the 6x41 chassis are for the x600L radios leather covering.

It could be dirty contacts on the pushbutton bandswitch.

All of the 600 series chassis are the same so any 6x40 will work. Sams and Riders will just look different, but electrically the same. The 1 was added because the leather sets have a tan dial face where all others are black.
