I recently purchased my first radio in the form of an Admiral Y837 chassis number 5L5. It has very loud feedback and is only able to pick up stations in the form of static. Any idea of what is causing it and how I can fix it?

A plain vanilla schematic for Admiral chassis 5L5 can be found in…
Beitman's Most-Often-Needed Volume 1960
available to download here: https://worldradiohistory.com/Beitman-Manual.htm

Replace the two Electrolytic filter capacitors C13A & C13B inside the metal can (canister) on top of the chassis / circuit-board.

Use 33µF (microfard) for the old 30MF
and 47µF for the old 50MF
with a Voltage rating of 160V or higher.
Theoretically Electrolytic capacitors with a temperature rating of 105° will last longer than 85°

Observe Polarity:
Their Negative leads are connected together (shown as BLUE below), ←bottom view of circuit-board.

Some dood's notes, same chassis / circuit-board: http://www118.pair.com/pkonshak/ady3006.html

just don't buy anything that he is selling - - you do not need it!

:) Greg.

Edit: Three methods of connecting receiver and the test meter..

Yep, do what Greg said about capacitors. Replace those first, then do any other work as necessary. Keep an eye out for any visually obvious damage, like scorch marks on anything or cracked and flaking wire insulation. That includes the power cord.
