I could use some help with selecting a replacement grill cloth for the Philco 39-7. I tried to clean the original fabric piece but it did not work very well. I looked on the forum retail sources, ebay and some online fabric sources but did not find a exact or even a close match. I really did not expect to but if someone has a close match or a source please let me know as i would like to keep it as close to original as possible.

I live in the Lancaster PA area and Quilt making and the Amish are a big deal here. So there are plenty of retail stores selling fabrics. I spent a hour yesterday looking thru the inventory of one store until my eyes were bugging out. I came up with two alternatives shown in the attached pictures. Neither have much surface texture but the colors are in the same ball park and the patterns do not look to modern for a 1939 radio.

Let me know which you prefer or if you have something you have used or seen on another radio let me know about it and I will investigate. I have not refinished the cabinet yet so I have time to find the right fabric.

John

Thank you for the link to the RadioDaze cloth. Is there anyone that has used this cloth in a 39-7 (or other model with the same cloth) that has before and after pictures? I would like to see how close the color is and the pattern repeat to verify before ordering.

I like a more subdued cloth. Doesn't detract from the cabinet wood. Put it on this 38-1 when it was restored.

You can see why the original V cloth (and white canvas) was replaced.

I refinished a couple Philco radios that used the same grill cloth. The one on the left has the original grill cloth, and the one on the right has the replacement grill cloth. Unless you're looking from a couple of inches away, you can't tell which is the original and which is the replacement. I have some left over so if you can PM the dimensions you need and your address I'll send you a piece.

Tom (barrettt) was kind enough to send me a small piece of the extra Radio Daze grill cloth that was recommended. Below is a picture of the original and the Radio Daze sub. The texture matches but the color is not even close.

I guess I will have to go ahead with my option B unless something closer or more of a match to original can be found.

I appreciate Tom donating the cloth to me and it will not be wasted. I have a Bosch 515 radio I have started and this fabric will be a good replacement.

If the fabric color is too light you can always spray some toner on it to darken it to a closer match. The Radio Daze cloth is an exact pattern match. IMO I would be more interested in having the correct pattern than a perfect color match.

The original cloth has certainly changed color some since new. And the reproduction is probably the correct as new color, if you want to restore it as new the reproduction is probably the best way to go.
