I recently acquired this radio. It's fabulous except everything is wrong with it. It has blistering veneer on the corners, extensive delamination, the whole bottom has rotted and needs to be rebuilt, the chassis is rusty, and something much larger than a rat was living in the acoustical labyrinth, but I figured that it is too nice of a radio not to restore. It is also missing all of its feet, so I plan to turn a new set. Does anyone here have one of these sets? If so, could you send me a photo of one of these feet so I have something to copy? Could you also measure the maximum diameter? Thanks. Additionally, if someone has a set of knobs for this set that they would like to sell, I'd be interested.

The worst of the restoration is now over. The rotted wood on the base has been replaced. I was able to fix the blistering veneer by drilling holes into each blister and then injecting a quick setting modelling glue underneath the veneers. Now, I need to turn the feet. I bought some claro walnut for the purpose. Does anyone have a photo of the original that they could share? I would greatly appreciate it. Here is what it looked like before:

From looking at the image available on Radiomuseum, I'm pretty sure the feet on my SC set at home are similar. It's a ball style, split down the middle with a glued-in peg to attach them. I'm visiting my folks this weekend so I can get some dimensions and better photos if you're interested. This is the only picture I have at the moment. Attachment:

Thanks, but I think my radio had different feet—more of a globe shape. I could find only a fuzzy photo online. I think I’ll just trust my judgement and taste on this one. Good luck on your project.

Are you also missing the other two feet or have you not yet glued them on?

Good luck on your project. Understandable. I'm in a similar boat, as only 2 1/2 of the 4 feet survived on my set. Need to find someone who can turn some for me locally.

You’re in luck. I actually salvaged three feet from that exact model that I found in a dumpster, thinking they were the same as the feet for the my 140L that are also missing. I’d send them to you for the cost of the shipping. I believe one is split in half and the other is still attached to curved trim, but they should work. PM if you are interested.

Did you receive my PM? I would love to have those feet.

That is going to look fantastic when it's complete, especially with that ornate trim!

More progress has been made. I gave it a good sanding, gave it a few coats of lacquer, and added some decals. I also came to my senses and added a Carpathian elm veneer at the base since I last posted a photo. There was no evidence of this when I bought the radio, only some tatters of a plain-sawn walnut veneer, but judging from photographs, there probably was originally a fancier veneer on top of it which had been lost. Now I just need to add a little toner to mask the mismatched wood and add some final coats of lacquer. I was able to get the inside relatively clean (when I bought it every crevice was stuffed with straw, seeds, and spider eggs--I believe squirrels were living in it). If anyone has one of these, please share a photo. I think it would be interesting to see a comparison.

I have had mine for about 20 years now. the electronics were supposed to have been redone. cabinet is in decent shape , i think some of the knobs are not correct. i also am not sure chassis is correct because my tone selector has another position,

That looks to be in great condition! If you need any parts, I have two spare chassis for it and I would be glad to share. Just let me know.
I am working on the electronics now. It might be done in a couple of months.
I’m still looking for knobs for it. If anyone has some they would like to sell, please let me know. They don’t have to be in great condition or a complete set.

If you want to confirm the chassis is correct, just count the tubes. Stromberg-Carlson did make another radio with a similar chassis but with one extra tube and one with the same chassis but with two speakers and a record player.

Nice job Gold Dial. Is that some sort of access hatch you have on the inside bottom of the cabinet? It looks like plexiglass from the pics. What is the idea behind that?

That's a wire mesh. The acoustical labyrinth filters the sound through a long channel and allows it to exit through the bottom. That is why almost all of these radios stand on feet of some kind or another. The acoustical labyrinth is lined with some kind of loose, sound-absorbing cellulose material. They had the foresight to know that this would be mouse heaven, so they blocked the bottom with a fine mesh. I was able to copy the original design and salvage the mesh from there.

Great job, well worth the effort and have fun doing it and something to show for it. Good to keep your mind busy. Should be proud.
