This poor baby Strat has been to hell and back. Needing some attention badly. The veneer layers is shot even on the inside of cabinet and needed to be removed and replaced. Top section of veneer was peeling and was removed for new install of fresh veneers, along with both sides including new cross banding sub straight veneer.. Upper right shoulder cracked along glue seam, being repaired. Only veneer still good was the upper L&R front shoulder areas. Coming along nicely as you can see in the pictures, all new midnight dark zenith blue will be sprayed on inside cabinet after outside is completed, new reproduction grill will be installed & grill cloth. Electrical work is being totally redone by the owner, should have cabinet completed early next week. Thanks for looking

Coming right along, cabinet is all assembled and ready for some color and finish. Quite a bit of work on this one, i wetted some burl to show the wood grain sure looks nice.. Almost every one of these 12a58,s the vertical columns are cracked, what a pain to fix those. This cabinet was worst than most because of the severe veneer damage including veneer layers on the inside, had to be done so I replaced it. Some one said you need to get a vacuum press for all the veneer work I do. Not going to happen, these cabinets were veneered in sections before it cabinet was assembled, using molds and high pressure press's to press the veneer as it dried rock hard. I cant do that . New veneer on both sides, top, lower control panel strip & base shelve next to speaker grill, burl veneer on top of sides, waterfall curve on top center, only original veneer left is on the upper L&R shoulders and front dial control panel.

What technique do you use for veneering? Hammer veneering with hide glue? PVA with a roller then ironing?

I usually use the hammer veneering technique but I find this can add extra moisture to the wood, causing it to warp unless both surfaces are veneered simultaneously. I have a Philco 38-116 that has bowed out sides for this reason.

Well this one done now, came out real nice, 7 days of work in the cabinet shop. I think i did pretty good on this one considering how much was needed to get done on the veneer & sub straight , same thing like on the 1000z i did few months ago . Just wanted to show you guys the finished cabinet, maybe some of you can learn a little from the pictures of what it takes to restore these radio cabinets. I know i don't get into to much step by step and depth on how I do everything with these post's , just ask I can try and weigh in on some technique's I use.

Unbelievable workmanship Fred. Looks like a million bucks. The before and after is jaw dropping. I know it has taken you a lot of cabinets to get where you are now. I have watched you take on some serious projects in the past, and you keep getting better and better working your magic. Thanks for taking the time to post the pics.

Hi Fred, you never disappoint! I have tried many ways to veneer too, hot hide glue made caused shrinkage and cracks, still the best way that I have found is "Heat lock" from veneer supplies is the best for me but I can't use it before it is out of it's advertised use by date. I've also used PVA glues with success.
Again very nice job.
Rich

I've been away for a while, but had to comment on this one.

I can hardly believe that is the same cabinet. Amazing work as always Fred!
