I recently aquired an early Zenith OT 1000, which has the cowhide lining on the outside. As I'm very new to radio restoration I have decided to start with the exterior first. The unit is in very clean shape and has very little pitting, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend some products and procedures for cleaning up the exterior to get it as shiny and new as possible. For the leather, chrome and brushed metal as well as the plastic.

Appreciate any help I can get on my first project.

(I'm brand-new to this forum, so I hope I posted this correctly).

I use a leather cleaner on the cowhide covering on early 1000's. Cold cream can also be used if available. I generally use Novus 2 on plastic and metal, followed by Novus 1.

Hi Ed,

Thanks so much for your reply on my post. Much appreciated. I have heard people talk about the Novus product and think I will order some. As far as the leather is concerned I stumbled on this product called "Leather Therapy" Restorer and Conditioner. It works amazingly!! I have added a photo of the bottle. It is not expensive either.

What is the name of the leather cleaner you are using?

Warm regards,

Frans

Post some photos of your 1000 when you finish. We'd like to see it. The 1000 and 3000 solid state Trans-Oceanics were notorious for pitting and flaking chrome, for which there is no cure. If you have any spots like that on your model, there isn't really anything you can do that won't make it look worse.

I will definitely post the photos Ed!

The only pitting that I have on my unit is around the Zenith logo...

Other than that there is none. The handle is also in great shape.

Will update once complete!
