Hello once again :
I have a Zenith 10S130 radio. I'm trying to remove the tuning knob. It's made of wood and has set screws holding it to the shaft.
I have applied aerocroil penetrating oil and let it soak for a few hours and when I try to loosen the set screws it feels like I'm going to crack the slot on the screw before it turns. Does anyone hav any advice for me ?

I've always kept a couple of these in my set of tools or similar:

It is a long, thin, flat head screwdriver with a 1/8" wide tip. Xcelite used to make these, but apparently not any more. These long, skinny screwdrivers have a thousand uses and were a staple back in my TV repair days. They will give you the leverage you need to break the screw tension on the first shot rather than strip the slot like you probably will using a short jeweler's screwdriver or similar. I would also get a good dose of WD-40 in the hole making sure the hole faces up so gravity can do its work for awhile before you attempt

Can you tell me what the value is on this capacitor, ,, the dots are green , black, red.
is it .05 picofarad ?

Green, black, red should be 5000pf (picofarads) or .005mf (microfarads)

i was close but no cigar. lol
.005 MF okay
this cap is connected ,, one leg to chassis and the other is connected to the AC line.
what type of cap should i use to replace the black one in the pic ?

could i use this cap in place of the black one ?
i'm not sure of the voltage rating of the two.
i'm guessing the last brown dot on the brown one means 100 Volts ?
i have no idea of the voltage rating of the black one .
can anyone please help ?

Hi Terry:

First question is what model radio is this cap in? Second question is why are you replacing it? As part of a general recap or because you have determined it is bad?

From your description that it is connected line to ground, it is for RF suppression and should be replaced with a new AC rated cap of the same value, preferably one designed to fail "open". You can purchase these from "Just Radios" under the category of X1/Y2 AC-Rated Disc Safety Capacitors. I would definitely not use that old cap you pictured as a replacement. These are very critical components for safety and should be of the highest quality.

Also, as this thread has veered into Electrical Mechanical Restoration, I think either the moderator should move it or you should repost your questions in that forum on a new thread. You will get plenty of expert advice there.

The black one may be a wire wound resistor. Check the schematic.
