This is one of my favorite zenith tombstones from the early 30,s It was slathered with a shellac type clear and in all rights probably protected the cabinet some what. The cabinet is not in bad shape and will look outstanding when it is refinished properly. Getting the cabinet ready for refinish is most important. The chassis on the other hand was a mess I really didn't want to mess will it, I did have a add up (WTB) looking for a better chassis with no luck so I'm going to repair and rebuild this one with some help from Joe the zenithman,s electrical guy named Cliff. I will send to Cliff in Tennessee after its painted too redo the chassis,s electrical, It was eaten out badly I suspect mice. I bead blasted the chassis and removed all the rust and painted the chassis a factory lookin wrinkle finish. The speaker is good except it also has some rust, that will be takin care of and painted as well. Stay tunned on this one the highly collectable zenith 715 , this radio will look premo when its all done. I can not figure out why the tag that screwed to the chassis says its a model 755 with 80 watts of power, that cant be right. :?:

Coming along with on of my favorites, I have went over this cabinet to make sure everything was just right for some color, toned and sealed with for coats of sealer in these pictures, sealer dries in a flat appearance. Tomorrow I will sand a bit on the sealer and then clear the cabinet more to give it some depth.

Most of these 715,s don't have the decorative trim above the escutcheon, almost all the other pictures of this model 715 zeniths online don't show that trim piece, after close inspection the square hole where the escutcheon goes on this radio looks like the square hole was cut to big and patched in with a piece of wood and then the decorative trim was placed over the slit mark where the new wood was placed. There is evidence of this on just two other radio pictures on the web. My guess it that some time during production a worker cut the hole out to big for the escutcheon and was repaired in order to save the cabinets, no telling how many were cut to big and fixed before that caught the problem. Any thoughts from the zenith experts? This could be a rare set than the normal sets because of this , like the upside down airplane on a few stamps that were made long ago, or some coins that where very valuable because of a miss print. Here are some pictures of what im talking about.

File comment: This decorative molding will cover the mark where it was patched from factory. I did see one other set on the web with this molding and one other picture wher the molding was missing and you can see the repair from factory. All other picture don't have this molding on the radio.

It could mean an early production cabinet. Perhaps the first drawing given to the cabinet shop had a typo or Zenith changed the escutcheon size after the first so many wood cabinets were made and to keep from discarding them this was the solution...I don't know for sure about this case, but things like that are not uncommon in production environments.

Cabinet is now finished and waiting on the chassis to get finished, then I will get it all put back together. The cloth I used here was as close as I could get to the factory looking stuff and was marked zenith reproduction cloth that I bought a while back at an radio auction., this cloth I think looks pretty darn good in there. This 715 really looks good one of my favorites now in my collection. I will post the completed radio in a month or so from now, had to send the chassis out of Texas for repairs and may take a little while before I get it back

File comment: For some reason on the other radios of the same the left side of speaker board is nor as long and at first I thought is was broke, not the case, had to glue the hanging grill cloth down in that area.

Absolutely beautiful, Fred. The grille cloth is very close to original and certainly complements the style. This dial is similar to the one I emailed you about recently. If you could snap a few pictures of the chassis with the dial cord installed, I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks,
Dwayne

I am very pleased with my 715, when I first torn it down I was saddened when I saw the condition of chassis, but you know what I have ( restored) done worst before. Maybe I thought when I got it wasn't all that bad , you don't take the chassis out of cabinet before you buy it and nether did the previous owner. No way of telling at that point what lurks inside. Any way with help on the electrical this 715 is playing great even the shadow meter is alive. Cabinet is lookin great, all original wood veneer, solid, colors and smooth clear make this zenith a top shelf item. Uncommon to see this model around and restored to the high quality this one is remarkable. I love this zenith for sure, thank you all for keeping an eye on this restore.

I have the same Zenith model/cabinet and it has the same trim piece above the dial escutcheon.
Took a close look and I can see mine has the same overcut repair above the dial escutcheon.
Nice work Fred.
