I have had this very nice hard to come by philco 16b shouldered tombstone sitting in storage for a while now I feeling like getting her back into some daylight and do a restore on it. Looks like it was stripped at some point of all its finish and then given a very light coat of dull looking shellac or something, any way the wood on this radio is outstanding and should refinish very well and look outstanding when completed. I will go over the entire chassis including getting rid of the rust and do a nice paint job on it. This is one of best sounding radios from what I have read and I have two other 16b,s but not this model and they sound great, cant wait to get this one finished and displayed.

Your 16B has been finished with semi-gloss polyurethane. It certainly looks odd. If it were mine and I was anxious to finish the project, I'd try giving it another top coat of polyurethane but gloss, not semi-gloss. Two coats of the gloss stuff from a rattle can should do nicely. However, it isn't original and that bothers some collectors.

You can also remove the semi-gloss fairly easily with acetone; this would be the preferred method in correcting a wrong finish. Doing this will allow you to do a correct finish.

Keep in mind that there are no "radio police" who conduct raids your collection and take samples of the finishes. If it looks nice consider keeping the semi-gloss and final coating it with gloss poly. It's not an especially rare radio so don't loose sleep over in incorrect finish.

Here's a few pics of the chassis, I really thinking about getting a new dial , this one has turned dark red and the pilot lamp really isn't bright enough to lite up the numbers on the dial. radio daze has them for around $25. The rust is gone, I bead blasted the chassis and sprayed on some good primer then painted silver in lacquer.

Well its about time, have been busy as a beetle lately working on other stuff . Finally got this beauty finished up and ready to be displayed and listened too, Everything came out very well , new dial scale from radio daze installed, the old one to dark to let any light thru, one thing is the shadow meter isn't working at this point the tiny coil is open and cant find the end of wire to try and fix so I will have to locate a good one so if any of you guys have one you can unload let me know. The radio plays very well and sounds good also, I haven't seen to many shouldered 16b tombstones around compared to the other 16b tombstone's Philco made, this model just doesn't show up much. I believe this is an uncommon model these days, I'm sure Ron Ramirez would know for sure. Thanks for lookin.
