I know some of you would just clean up this original finish on this zenith 5-s-127 but not me, I want this very nice radio to look new again and will have a high gloss finish. I also will replace some caps and tuning belt. stay tuned in on this one . Fresh zenith blue will also be sprayed on inside off cabinet, Should have the cabinet done in a few days.

All done you guys, I finished her out with the same colors as what was on it from the factory and with high gloss, I usually don't clear in high gloss more of a semi gloss is what I'm use to doing but I saw one of these on eBay sell for high bucks in the high gloss finish. a lot of buyers out their love the high gloss and it does look really nice that way. All of the radios and the consoles this guy sells on eBay are of the same high gloss and he is getting Premium prices for his sets. I am going to refinish a 12s265 of mine soon and do that one also in high gloss piano finish so stay tuned in for that one.

Fred has done three cabinets for me so far and I'm in California. Pack it right and ship it. You'll be happy you did, long after the shipping charges are forgotten....

As far as I'm concerned Fred you can refinish every radio you come across :D .

Looks great Fred with that beautiful shine. I have the same nice finish on my AK447 and the funny thing is that one member has been critical of my radio since I posted it and said I should send it to you for refinishing .

I don't know why maybe because of the color brown on the trim, I think it should be black, some guys here pick apart other radios that have been refinished and point out what seem to them is not factory looking. They maybe right or maybe wrong, some collectors' like high gloss finishes others don't, Some like satin or semi gloss finishes, I like them all and normally clear mine in semi gloss or satin but sometimes I will do a high gloss like this zenith 5s127. I have done some console zeniths in high gloss and a Atwater Kent 509 in piano high gloss and boy does it look sweet heres a few pictures of that 509 and a zenith 12s568 in Machine buffed black Steinway piano finish. Also I wanted to show the 5s127 also its all finished now and plays very well. ,

When it rolled out of the factory it probably looked much closer to what you don't like....My opinion is that if a set has a good original patina that can be preserve it is nice to keep that, but if the original finish is beyond saving why not shine and brighten it up like new?
Unless a set is especially rare there should be a nice original patina piece out there for you to find.

It does look like it was bleached and should not have been done that way, colors are too bright and the trim shouldn't be brown but black, that's the only think that I see wrong now. But it doesn't look bad, it could be refinished to get to look more factory and older with a more satiny finish.

I've always thought that if its wood the grain should show, that's what makes wood look so rich and so much better than plastic radios. The other radio is stained too dark or the 85 years of build up has covered up the look of the wood making it look dark and dull. It may just need a good cleaning and polish to bring out the look of the wood.

I heard of bleaching wood but never tried it. Could be the bright lighting when picture was takin bringing out the colors, don't get me wrong it looks very nice to see the wood grain like that. It may not have been bleached and probably wasn't, I wouldn't change anything at this point except the brown trim and knobs which your already doing, here's a picture of mine and I mite refinish it as well , and its the way I bought it.

The radio isn't quite that bright, its the lighting.
