Even with a 7yo thread, there's a little trick that has given me fairly good results with faceplate scratches, if they are not too deep. It does not remove them completely but has generally made them fade out considerably.

A little bit of NOVUS 2 ... the plastics scratch remover, medium grade. Follow it up with NOVUS-1 or your favorite finishing polish. NOVUS 2 has a very fine grade of abrasive in it, designed for taking light scratches out of plastic, so it's going to be about as safe as it gets on metal.

As others noted, sometimes there was a laquer finish on these things, and NOVUS works pretty well taking scratches out of that. If they go deeper, into the metal, it still helps but of course can't remove them. But it can hide them somewhat. For the brave, there's always NOVUS-3 :mrgreen:
