I'm looking at a used Sylvania 83 that I might hold on to as a spare for my B&K 550. Question is, is there any way to test it other than installing it in my 550 and rolling the dice?

Well, installing it in a known working device is always the best way to test any tube really. But some of the older testers will test the 83 if I am not mistaken.

In tube testers, the 83 will live probably forever, so be sure yours is actually bad before replacing it. Or you can always get a SS replacement, which I am wholeheartedly against. But that's just me.

I think the 83 in my tester is fine, but I was like "Well, it wouldn't hurt to have a backup. . . ."

My concern about checking the health of the backup in my 550 was the potential for damage to the tester if the tube is shorted. Meh, maybe I'll just wait for a spare that's been tested by someone else.

Can't remember ever having one shorted, and those Hickoks got a lot of abuse in the back of the 1956 ford station wagon service vehicle. They can test shorted before they are warmed up.

I have a 550 and used a TV-7 to test the 83 :-)

The 550 (and the 650) cannot test the 4-pin rectifiers.

So I'm overthinking this, eh? Wouldn't be the first time.
