Hp 3400a meter scale

Post by devildog63 »

Hp 3400a meter scale peeling. It's not bad, none of the lines are affected but I know it's a matter of time. I have hears of scanning and printing a new one. Is there a better way ?

You could try clear coating what’s left. It should preserve it. You’d have to remove the scale to do this safely

Thanks Barry. I'm thinking something like that too. I may acan it first in case the clear coat doesn't work out. I was wondering if the clear coat would have static build up ? I know one guy that cleaned the meter glass and his needle would jump all over the place. One thing for sure it's not gonna last much longer unless I do something.

I have a number of HP meters that I plan to coat with a spray of clear lacquer, after I scan them as a backup. I plan to use Microscale Industries Micro-Mask masking fluid on the mirror, rather than removing it from the meter card.
https://www.microscale.com/Merchant2/me ... de=FINPROD" -="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you try this, let us know how it turns out. I won’t be in a position to do it myself for another couple of months, as I’m recovering from hand surgery.

I noticed something when scanning the card for my HP 413A Null Meter. I left the card under the heavy lid of my scanner for several days. When I removed it, all the lifted pieces of emulsion had flattened back down. They stayed that way for months. So, put your meter card face-down on a pane of glass, stack some heavy books on top of it, and leave it that way for several days before you give it a coat of clear lacquer.

You can control static by wiping the glass, or plastic, with a dryer sheet. Lasts a long time.

Someone suggested that in my ghost meter phenomenon thread. My tripleet meter is still working well after a year or more? I did not use dryer sheets, just cleaned the surface with windex or alc. dont rem.. dont have dryer sheets around here.

Thanks fir sll the info. Barry I'll try your idea , if it works I may take some kind of adhesive with a toothpick and go around all the edges since it looks like it's peeling from the edges. Get them sealed up may make it last a while longer.

I use the furniture polish "Pledge"
It cleans and shines plexiglass and gets rid of static as well.
I'm guessing the dryer sheets have a waxy substance that achieves the same result.

I found if you just breath on the plastic meter glass it kills the static charge

Discussions of this issue are archived on the HP-Agilent-Keysight mailing list at groups.io .

When my HP 400EL scale started peeling, I trimmed a self-adhesive smartphone screen protector to the appropriate size and stuck it to the scale. A year later it is still good. It was tricky to cut out the region in front of the mirror.

Thanks for all the ideas. I sealed the face with clear sealer. Looks good. Before that I made several scans and prints for future needs.
Now I'm having a hard time finding the age of my meter. My serial number is 0979A13504 . I have a operating and service manual but it calls for a xxx-xxxx serial number. Anyone have insight to this ?
Thank you.

For the best estimate of year of construction, look at date codes on components. Artek sells manual 03400-90008 that covers your serial number prefix.
