I have asked to repair a Model 20VE and the metal canister next to the transformer looks like it is blown.

I haven't looked for schematics yet but I assume this is a container for a capacitor of some sort.

The gentleman says he has plugged it in, the tubes light up and the small fan on the underside of the record platform turns. He says after a little while all he gets is a loud hum.

Any advice would be appreciated as I am only just getting into radio/phonograph refurbishment

Okay this is a hot chassis, you need to be very careful working on it. One side of the power cord is connected to the chassis. Do not touch the chassis with both hands while it's energized.

You are correct that the metal can next to the transformer is more than likely the main electrolytic and it will have to be replaced. This is where the hum is coming from

You'll see a specification on the side of the can, it will look like 30mfd @ 150v. Remove the chassis, under the chassis, you'll see small cylinders with marking like .01mfd @ 150. These will also need to be replaced.
