Another RCA Victor Special Model M restoration. This is my sixth restoration of one of these. None are mine, sadly. These machines, designed by industrial designer John Vassos, were produced in 1938-1939 for the 1939 World’s Fair. The motor is hand cranked and the amp is battery powered.

The amp is powered from a 1.5v/90v AB Battery. There is one electrolytic cap and four wax/paper caps to replace. I stuff the new caps inside the old caps. The bias battery is replaced with a 1M resistor. I replaced three other out of tolerance resistors. All the tubes were good. The tube line-up is 1G6, 1A5, and a 1H5.

The Astatic crystal cartridge was dead, of course. I sent it to Gib Epling at West-Tech Services for rebuilding.

The motor in this machine was in very good condition. The only service required was to wipe off some old grease and lubricate the pivot points in the mechanism.

I made a new battery and connector. The battery uses ten 9-volt cells in series for the B supply and two D cells in parallel for the A supply.

Here's a link to a short You Tube video:

Ed you must be the restoration expert on these then. They are beautiful sets, but it would take a good chunk of gold from Fort Knox to own one.

Thanks, Larry. The owner of the machine shown here paid three big ones for it on eBay. I’ll never own one.

Where'd you get the battery cover? :-)

I make them. One of my earlier RCA Victor Special Model M customers had scans that I have modified to fit my boxes.

Ed;
You never know, maybe one day. Fleabay is an auction of sorts, and between lack of knowledge, and letting emotion override reasoning, people overbid at auctions. I still think of the height of the Catalin radio market, there were people paying $2500 for fairly common colours of some models, and as much as $6000 for the rarer ones. As pretty as some were they were still cheap Ac/Dc sets inside, now nobody will buy unless they can view it in person, or if it's really cheap.
Regards
Arran

Nice rebuild Ed Those are rare phonographs in that style. I look at your U tube about hem too. I have a model L in green vinyl. I believe you made the battery for it. these are record plays well built. Have you ever rebuilt one in the red vinyl ?? I believe they had three models made and each one looked better but increased in price. I TRied duplicating the record dividers and the front listing for mine. I think it was from one of yours that I figured out the specs.I have been looking for a user manual for them for a long time . Tom

Tom,

I have never seen any of the vinyl covered models. And I've never seen a user manual in any of the machines I have come across. I wonder if RCA even provided one as they did paste some basic instructions to the bottom of the battery compartment. I did make a schematic for the amplifier, which can be downloaded from the Resource page on my website if anyone needs one.

I hope this link posts. This is an article I did on RCA portable phonographs. It does not show the res vinyl one though. I this does not take I WLL TRY to down size some of my pictures . It is through The Antique Phonograph web site. I originally posted his on a forum and it is not professional. If I knew they would post it I would have labeled them better. http://www.antiquephono.org/wp-content/ ... rticle.pdf
I will have to down size some photos

I found the link that shows the RCA special model J. I could not remember where it was posted. I think this model is rare. I have only seen two up for sale. I Wish I had purchased one. http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=32043 Tom
