I bought a nice 20+ inch CRT monitor at a tag sale.... I bought it because i believe that they have better picture quallity over LCD..... Unfort the screen has ghosting image on it and burned into the screen.. Is there away of fixing this or should I just Shi* can it?

The image is "etched" into the phosphor coating on the inside front of the CRT. No way to get at it or reverse it.

Sad.... that's why 'screen savers' were invented.

No way that I know of to fix screen burn. Back in the 80's I remember the computer swap meets and many venders had airport monitors with massive screen burn. You could see the flight names while it was sitting on the asphalt. Personally I don't miss CRT monitors one bit. And for picture quality the new LED backlit monitors are great.

You can try running it at a high brightness with a blank raster, that tends to "age" the unburned areas faster than the burned, but I doubt it will ever be perfect...

Back in the days of CRT terminals, all that could be displayed was text. Usually 25 lines tall, with 80 characters per line.


Always in the same location. The screen would get little rectangles burned into it in this 80 x 25 pattern. A tad more burnt along the left edge, since most used some sort of command line interface:


These terminals connected to some unseen mainframe, over a RS232 serial link, that transmitted the characters typed and displayed received characters onto the CRT. Early CP/M personal computers used the same style link. Most hobbyist couldn't afford a CRT terminal and often bought a used Teletype, which also second as a printer.

Yeah I just repaired a couple IBM 5151 monitors, luckily neither are burned...

Someone told me that you could lessen burn-in by swiping a magnet back and forth over the area, with video on the screen, in
as many directions (incidental angles) as possible. This is a good oppurtunity to try it, since the screen is already not usable
anyway....

You mean something like this:


Inexpensive rare earth magnets, and high resolution (if you consider VGA high resolution) got into the hands of the "kiddies" (you set the age bracket) just about the same time. We'd stick a magnet against somebodies monitor, and leave a big distorted color blob there. You could degauss it, by waving the same magnet back and forth, and move it backwards, away from the screen, with each swipe.

Also, the whole screen would ripple, if there was a big linear supply nearby (big iron xfmr). Sometimes, you couldn't consciously see it, but with me, it relayed to info to my brain. My inner ear said otherwise, and it would make me queazy.

Ain't gonna happen, burned phosphor could care less about magnetism, all that's going to happen is screwed up purity that may require a manual degaussing coil to to correct...
