A lot of great singers listed here; let's add Darlene Love, and Arlene Smith (of the Chantels).

Madonna was a big violator of that from her start. Even her stage name irritated me because some religions use "Madonna" to refer to the Virgin Mary. And trying to raise little girls at the same time Madonna published a book of naked pictures of herself really just sealed it for me. How was I supposed to shield my kids from the most famous female pop singer in the world? As a dad it was constantly bothering me.
Putting all that aside though I must say that Madonna has an extremely beautiful voice. Sometimes I'll hear a song on the radio without knowing who is singing it and think "That is just incredibly beautiful." Later I'll ask someone about it or look it up and find out that Madonna is who I was listening to. Well, Madonna was her name. Blame her parents. Anyway, Jo Stafford Julie London Shinehead O'Connor Delores O"Rierdon (Love cute bald Irish chicks) Coors (Love cute Irish chicks with hair) Kate Bush (words fail) Chrissie Hynde Dusty Springfield Janis in no particular order

pixellany wrote: I was waiting for someone to say "Lada Gaga".....seriously, I find her to be an interesting person, but I can't seem to enjoy her music. I had written Lada Gaga off as just another no talent pop singer until I heard her duet with Tony Bennett "The Lady is a Tramp." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPAmDULCVrUI thought it was absolutely brilliant. She's already released her own jazz album and seems to be transitioning into that genre. I think she'll probably have a good career in jazz. I don't think that her voice is especially great, but it all comes down to working with what you've got, and I think she does that really well. Now, when it comes to a really great voice, my number one choice is kd lang. I've never heard anyone with the perfect control that she has. To see what I mean, have a listen to any of the duets that she's done. In every case she matches her voice so perfectly with her singing partner you don't always know which one you're hearing. Example: With Roy Orbison doing "Crying". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNq-8VBradUOh yes, then there's Susan Boyle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWykA truly stunning voice.

The love of my life - Alison Krauss, followed by Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, and, like the stage persona or not, Lady Gaga. She has some serious pipes when she's doing the classics.

I think I replied to this, but if not, here's my list: Linda Ronstadt, Enya, Nancy Sinatra. Especially Nancy with Lee Hazelwood. RW

Another almost-forgotten female vocalist from the 1950s is the late Lillian Lee (Leach); a member of the Mellows, an R&B group that never really hit the big time. She was great!

There were many top female singers. However, the current one who I listen to is Taylor Swift.

I need to add: Annie Haslam from Renaissance, and Grace Slick. Annie had about a 5 octave voice, supposedly. RW
