Okay, this isn't an antique radio. I have a Sony ICF-SW7600GR with no AC power adapter. Apparently the proper adapter for this radio is mfgr discontinued. I'm trying to rig something up but I need the proper coaxial DC plug. The common size of plug, measuring 5.5 mm OD is too large. I measured the ID of the jack to be about 4.5 mm. Does anyone know the precise size of the coaxial plug to use with this radio?

I would say look at the power ratings on the supply, voltage and amps then look for an image online with those specs :|

What size is the center pin? 2.1 mm? Might it take a 5mm or 5.1mm OD plug? Those are available from allelectronics.com.

Mouser lists a number of OD's from 4.75 mm on down:

Universal Radio has an after-market (non-Sony) adapter, and they also sell a DC plug:

The original AC adapter (part number AC-E60HG) had a Sony DC jack 1.7(id) x 4(od) x 10mm in length.

European and US markings.

Replacement adapters have been reported to cause interference.
Sony also made 6V 700mA AC adapters with negative center polarity, be careful.

Do your research on-line. :)

I had already been to the Universal Radio site and looked at that entry. But the dimensions of the Sony DC plug are what I'm looking for so I can buy just the plug. 4mm OD for the plug sounds like it matches my measurement of 4.5 mm (inside diameter for the jack). It's really hard to measure the diameter of the center pin in the jack, so I didn't even try. Thanks for that picture of the specs on the original adapter.

IDK if this will help or not, but I have a Sony ICF 2010, which uses a 4.5 volt supply. I measured the socket hole to be 6mm, and the plug at 5mm.

Well DUH!!!! I went back and re-checked the Universal Radio site, and they sell just the plug and give the dimensions I was looking for: it's 4mm OD and 1.7mm ID.

Re: Fifties: I used to have an ICF 2010 that I purchased around 1984 - a wonderful radio but I just plain wore it out! Gone are the days, apparently, when Sony includes an AC adapter with it's radios.

The Sony Walkman AC adapter will run your radio perfectly. It has the correct DC jack and the actual voltage output will be more than the 4.5V stated.

Older version AC-E455 square edged, decal on top half.
Later version AC-E455A rounded edges, decal full length.

Lots of them on ebay...
