In the introduction to Fort Laramie it is called "the saga of fighting men who rode the rim of empire." I have Googled and can't find out, what is the meaning of the phrase "the rim of empire." Does anyone know? I found a reference to a fiction book, with a similar title, set around the Revolutionary War. Does this phrase refer back to this era?

Fort Laramie the western, was set in the late 1800s Empire can mean extensive (vast) territory (under single domination or control)... the Great Plains...
