Hello everyone, I have had this neat "egg" for about 20 years and it has worked fine. The issue is now, no sound on the 8 track player. The best is moving and I hear a faint hiss in the speaker. I am trying to trouble shoot this, maybe a loose wire? Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm not familiar with that specific one. However, most have about the same drive system. The first thing you should check, is the belt, that is the most likely thing to fail. It could be stretched or even broken.

There's a bazillion electrolytic capacitors in the VX-33
High-resolution schematic is on-line...

example: Electrolytic capacitor - polarity symbol.

All capacitors should be marked with their values.
Use capacitors rated at 35V or 50V (for 6.3V 10V 16V 35V) and 105°C temperature rating.

For my money, Panasonic... 105°C
FC series
FM series
FR series are all good capacitors.

If there is no silkscreen printed on the trace side, mark their negative connections on the circuit board with a sharpie and replace them one at a time, otherwise you can get confused.
Never use a pencil as it can cause trouble between traces.

Modern day electrolytic capacitors have become...

oh... if the traces begin to lift, your iron is not hot enough - you want to get in-and-out quickly.

I agree with startgroove on this one, the most common failure I've seen is with the belts, especially if everything else it working. Start by taking the cover off and just make sure the mechanism is moving when powered.

First check the belt. Most common failure.

Also if this has a DC motor this sometimes have issues with the governor. If you power it up and the motor is not turning, give it a little push and see if it starts running. If so, you can try cleaning the contacts in the motor for a temporary fix. Usually though, and especially if operation seems erratic, you will be replacing the motor.
