Not the blade, but the handle. The folding handle dropped down with my my fingers near the hinge. The end of my middle finger got pinched between the two parts of the handle, and there's only about 1/8 inch space between the two parts. It shattered the bone and split the flesh nearly all the way around. Spent Friday night in the ER getting it stitched back on, and have an appt. with a hand surgeon Monday morning. I may need surgery.

Also, I'm scheduled to have surgery on both my foot and ankle in four days. I may have to reschedule that depending on what the surgeon says.

So... I won't be making any new parts or replenishing stock that runs out for a while. If you have ordered parts, or order in the next couple weeks, expect a delay. I'll do what I can, but there will be lots of other things that I'll have to have help doing before I can get to my parts business.

Sorry, but sh*t happens.

Yikes! Lawnmowers are crazy things. I recently pinched myself with the brake bail on my mower. Not with a result like you experienced, but I thought it ironic that it would be the safety mechanism that hurt me.

Best wishes for healing and a speedy recovery!

Ouch! Hope you heal well. It's always amazed me how FAST these things can happen. I recently tried to cut off my left index finger with an angle grinder. Using it without the safety guard of course, don't we all? It's such a little thing ... how could it hurt you.

Well, it can, and it did, and it took an instant. 5 stitches, almost to the bone but not quite. Partial loss of feeling around the wound, and a bit of tingling in the fingertip which seems to be recovering slowly. I got lucky. I ALWAYS use gloves with this thing.... except this once.

nature's way of telling us to slow down maybe......

Youch! Hope that the tendons and nerves are okay! I deeply cut the forefinger on my left hand and the tip is STILL numb after over a year:(-Gearhead222

Take care, rest, and heal up Ed, knobs and parts can wait!

I deeply cut the middle finger of my right hand years ago with a circular saw. Had to see a hand surgeon for micro surgery. Worked hard on PT so I have full motion but a little numbness that I've gotten used to.

Ed, I am sorry to hear this. I know that there are traps out there and we try to avoid them. But the always seem to get us eventually.

Hope you have a successful healing quickly.

Ed, Hoping everything goes well, with your speedy recovery. About 20 yrs ago, I was sharpening a mower blade for a friend (it wasn't even my mower!), with his blade safely clamped in a large bench vice, so I could run the blade-file over it. Well, I got to talking with my friend and forgot to think safety; then ran my thumb too far on one stroke of the file, and about 1/4" end of my thumb sliced off, landing on the floor.....very painful for the next few months. It wasn't large enough for ER to stitch back on (we had taken it along, packed in ice).

Should you possibly take a few photos of your mower's handle, showing its design problem?; then email that with story to the appropriate gov't safety org like "Osha" or "Ansi"....to make newer mowers safer.

Fred

Thanks for the heads up! I fold my mower handle every time I use it, I'll be much more careful.
I hear beer is a great food for recovery, I hope it all goes well for you!

Thanks everyone for the good wishes.
The surgeon said that there's no point in disturbing the wound more and that it should heal ok with the stitches and the bone will fix itself. I guess I'll take his word for it. I didn't expect that since it was split 3/4 the way around and the bone broken in 4 places. But, I do have feeling in the end of the finger, so that's a good sign.

Now if I can just keep from bumping it once every hour.

Had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic: not too bad
Got a tetanus shot: sore arm
Got a pneumonia shot in the other arm: really sore arm
Got 2 biopsies for skin cancer: 2 more sore spots

Next up is foot surgery in the morning.

Good times!

Ed, that finger is going to be tender for a while.
Buy or make a padded metal finger stall to protect it while its healing .

I have a padded metal guard, but just bumping that is painful.
