Mac Rebennack {Dr. John, Doctor John The Night Tripper} wasn't just a club act. He also worked as a session musician in the 1960's.

One of my favorite artists ever. Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago, and (though a security guy) he signed my copy of his autobiography. I'll miss him and his unique music.

I saw him at "Toronto Pop" in June, 1969 which also included a new band nobody had ever heard of at that time called "Alice Cooper." Alice Cooper wasn't even listed on the ads for the festival. I didn't realize that Dr. John's act was more than just a shtick. At the time I thought he was just more vaudeville.

One of his great mostly forgotten about songs was "Television"!, from the early 1990's...Think the folks on here would "dig the funk",
after all most of us on here have collected vintage TV's at one time or another ..."Scratching and scrambling, we never make a dime",
and of course my favorite, "How come?...how come? we never watch television?"
I personally haven't watched television since Sanford & Son went off the air

His Father ran a famous (amongst musicians) TV and appliance store in New Orleans,
when I talked to him before a full band/proper attire show at the Fairmont hotel in Chicago in the late '80's,
we mostly talked about our Father's and their wild and wooly repairman ways...Maria Muldaur listening in was aghast at our tales.

Saw him live probably 6 times over 30 years. Was at the great New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest as a headlining "closer" act on the larger stages.

Very sad..... I have his 1972 album on 8track and I have read thats his best album! (I still havent been able to listen as my player has been out for months being fixed)
